Walthers has a whole new announcement for March. Bi-level auto carriers, these, the Railgon gondola, Greenville wood chip cars (somebody must have noticed what these bring on eBay), a chocolate factory, modern antenna clusters, and City of San Francisco cars.

Honestly, lots of good stuff in this month's announcements. The Greenville cars are good to see back in production, and the autoracks look nice too. I couldn't do anything with the previous run since they had the Trailer Train logo; I'm happy that this new run has the 1991 Speed logo. Maybe I'll pick up one or two when they hit hobby shops. I see the previous run still in stock at some stores, so I'm not too worried about preordering or missing out, I feel like there will be enough to go around.
The new structures are cool too. The Cell tower antennas would be a pretty easy upgrade for a lot of layouts, and the new factory building could easily be repurposed into pretty much any industry. I like that the office building is a bit bigger, rather than some of the smaller 'field office' single-story structures included with some other kits. You could easily break the kit up and put that structure somewhere else on the layout.

I almost missed the new woodchip hopper announcement. Been a while on those, glad to see SCL made the cut this time around.
Surprised the Bay Line / ASAB scheme did not come back this time or even the older ASAB scheme. You can buy small blocks of gold for cheaper than they go second hand.

If I ever have a chocolate factory on my layout it will be a much older-looking building (or part of one), reminiscent of the former Blumenthal Brothers factory on Margaret Street in my Babcia's (Polish-born grandmother's) neighborhood in the Frankford section of Northeast Philadelphia, which was the original maker of such goodies as Raisinets, Sno Caps (small nonpareils) and Goobers. Small flowers called four o'clocks grew in the very narrow space between Its old brick wall and the sidewalk. The aromas emanating from within were wonderful. As a girl my mother told her mother that she'd like to work there; Babcia told her she'd soon get tired of the smell.

Is there a link to all these new announcements ? Here you go, hopefully this link works: trains.walthers.com/hubfs/PDF/New%20Product%20Express/MARCH%202023%20Walthers%20New%20Product%20Announcement_2.pdfI’m really glad to see the Greenville wood chip cars return. I don’t model an area where they were in use, but I’ve seen the prototype cars a number of times in the Southeast and really like the model. I think I'll stay with the ScaleTrains version of this car. is this the same as the Scale Trains car? Yes, same Bethlehem Steel prototype, unfortunately. Correction: The Walthers prototype is a TTX class BSH71A flatcar TTPX series 82036-82159, built 11-79 to 12-79 by Bethlehem Steel, as mentioned below, so a slightly different prototype from the ScaleTrains cars, and a common and useful addition. I wish it was in the Proto line, but I'll order a few undecorated cars to detail up. I would still like to see someone produce one of the many other bulkhead flat prototypes out there, like Trinity TTX Class RSH72 flats, one of the many SP/SSW cars, or even L&N’s Ortners flats. Nothing for me here this time around. The chocolate factory kit is interesting, I once watched the NS job that switched the now-demolished Hershey main plant for hours once, a lot of different cars go in and out.

The car if it's supposed to be an F68AH, was only owned by TTX, painted in several variations.

I echo Dave's comments. This is one of the few times where trying to model Chicago isn't going to fit. Still would love to get a few of the chip cars, definitely in for a TT bulkhead to add some slight variety to the SXT version.

The car if it's supposed to be an F68AH, was only owned by TTX, painted in several variations. The PDF says it's based on BSH71A. According to a former TTX person, the F68AH's have wood floors, while the BSH71As, Bs, and Cs have nailable steel floors. The latter will be demonstrated on a model by a lack of "bolt holes" regularly repeated in the flooring, I believe. "Plank" width might be different--don't know. The ScaleTrains comes with a wood deck, and lettered as a F68AH. If you need nailable steel flooring on your TTX Bethlehem bulkhead flats, then you might well choose the Walthers car. A further update: The BSH71's have a bare steel bulkhead face, while the F68AH's have wood sheathing. Only other purchasers of any of these cars was: MSV 400-484 (BSH71B) (Mississippi and Skuna Valley)(Kinda want one of these) SM 6001-6060 (BSH71B) (St. Marys) Again: Jim Eager My interest in running cars with cast-on grabs approaches zero. So does shaving off the grabs. At first thought, if I desperately needed the BSH71 version, I'd kitbash it from the ScaleTrains. Ed PS: The MSV cars went to WCRC (Columbia Basin). I DEFINITELY would be buying a couple of those!

I’ve had misgivings about the prototypes Walthers has selected for their Mainline series, since I wanted to see some of them in higher quality, superdetailed model form (e.g. the ACF 5090). However, I think this flat is a good choice, since the nailable steel floor and steel bulkhead faces are easier to represent in plastic than simulated wood. If you choose to upgrade them, the molded grab irons will be pretty straightforward to replace. I’ll get a few to work on, although I’m not sure there are good decals available for these cars, so decorated cars might be a better starting point than undecs. Dave

Dave and depending on era color matching the yellow on the grabs may not even be a big deal, a lot of the older TTPX bulkheads are running around with several different shades of yellow touch ups in various places on the car body.

I will probably go for one of these cars, I need more correct bulkheads.
I went searching for photos of the offered Walthers TTPX numbers online, and found photos of all of them except one - and shockingly, all of them were still in original TT -- TRAILER TRAIN paint. Photos ranged from the early 2000s even into the 2010s.

Now, if Walthers had done the Thrall version of these cars: Only 200 TTX cars (TSH, A, B, C), but 900 SSW, 300 SOU, 100 MDW, 50 ADN, 50 ITC, 45 OPE, 40 WP and 25 MSV. I like how they did both a brown, and a black paint job for these and the Greenville ballast cars for Southern Railway in four numbers. I am also glad to see the Claytor font being offered on more cars. This is going to be an expensive release. I wish the Family Lines car was in the later scheme but I will still get all four numbers of the early scheme. For the Greenville two bay, I have sent them suggestions for the SOU in orange and NS in black. Time will tell if we are going to see those offered.

I wish the Family Lines car was in the later scheme but I will still get all four numbers of the early scheme. Looking through online photos, it appears that a decent number of them survived in this scheme into the CSX era to get patched. CSXT 433330CSXT 433342CSXT 433398I’m probably going to order three of the Walthers cars to patch as those numbers above. What I didn’t realize is that there appears to have been an intermediate(?) scheme also, where they dropped the “THE” from the name but still had the WOODCHIP SERVICE lettering: CSXT 433588I feel like that came up in the discussion of the Safe-Pak autoracks, but it’s been a while since I read that thread. I actually have a couple sets of custom decals that someone made a decade or so ago for the FLS woodchip hopper scheme. I plan to use them eventually, but as I mentioned, while I love these hoppers, they’re not high on my priority list since they didn’t operate in the area in Maryland that I’m modeling. I’m sure I’m still going to break down and buy all the CSX numbers… Dave

In regards to Family Lines lettering, including “The” seems to be dependent on build date. In the first few years, they call themselves “The Family Lines System” in corporate documentation and such. Pig trailers, caboose fleets, hopper cars, some other misc new equipment included that text. At some point, it was shortened to just “Family Lines System” and new cars reflected that. Around 1979 or 1980 I think was the change. Perhaps they were paying by the letter when it came to paint jobs and dropping those 3 would save them x amount over however many orders.

Is it possible that the "foobies" from this bulkhead release were actually leased models from TTX that were painted in the schemes of the railroad they were leased to? The reason I ask is because I received some Rapido 66' bulkhead cars today, and some of them say they are leased. For example the black CP car says "leased from Procor Limited".

Seems a bit counter intuitive. Isn’t the whole purpose of the TTX railcar pool is to avoid having the railroad own the cars? A leasing company like Procor is different from a pool like TTX (that’s already jointly owned by the railroads).
