Building a Cannon kit gives you the confidence to try rolling your own...

so we are doing a Cannon theme? I can work with that. I recently put Cannon DB fans in two of my Bowser SD40-2s. First time I'd ever used them. The fans themselves were easy to build, but modifying the loco shell to accomodate them was a bit of a chore. I still have 2 left to do. Makes you wish there were Q Fans out there of equal quality.....

I've been chasing rabbits again. My interest in early RoadRailers led me to looking at lots of RoadRailer photos over the years, both on and off the rails. I kept finding a lot of the semi-trucks pulling RoadRailers were marked with northAmerican Van Lines logos. Eventually I'd learn that NS owned northAmerican during my modeling period, so I wanted to decorate some semi-trucks in this scheme. Of course decals couldn't be had in HO scale so I created my own. There's no point doing that set if I am only going to draw the door and air dam logos for the tractor, so I kept following that rabbit until I had a pretty good decal sheet. So if I have a good decal sheet I might as well build a proper moving trailer. The Herpa Kentucky van is a decent model but it can use a little help, so I've replaced the wheels and tires with some 3D printed low profile tire versions and dressed up the trailer sides by making up some doors out of 0.005" styrene. I got as far as painting the trailer before the phone rang and I had to go out of town. Hopefully I get the decals down this week and I can move onto the tractor.

Ryan: Nice job on the trailer and decals. Under NS' ownership, there used to be a fleet of 48' & 53' straight trailers that were transferred from NAVL to NS. They kept the color scheme but lost the lettering. IIRC they wore NSCZ trailer marks.

Here's a little experiment: laser cut ties (.0625" thick) with 3D printed tie plate inserts minus any spikes. Yes, you can see the 20um layer lines, but only in the photos! Not sure where this will go...probably nowhere. I will likely do a spiked version, meaning one with spikes printed on the tie plates, and hole to accept Proto 87 Stores' scale spikes. I also want to try a bridge tie section cut from .125" thick material, as well as printing more tie plates, this time with spikes the will actually hold the rail in place!

Ryan, to achieve the white, is that white decal paper, printed blue, or where you able to print in white?

They kept the color scheme but lost the lettering. IIRC they wore NSCZ trailer marks. I actually need to revise this sheet, so I'll be sure to add some NSCZ and NSZ reporting marks in addition to some number jumbles for these trailers. I remember seeing them on flatcars in the mid 90s and they always made an impression.

Ryan, thanks for the reply. Right after I posted my question, I took another look, and saw the "Printed in Canada", and figured you had Bill doing them. He does do great work, hopefully, one of these days I we will finally be settled in, and I can go back to modeling something so I can show off the ones he's done for me.

It's baking soda just dropped on the diorama, was lots of fun shooting those pics, I was trying for a low winter sun kind of look with the lighting and filters.

Hi All, Here is a rendering of the HO-scale tie plate with spike detail included for both aesthetic appearance and rail holding functionality. The tie plate and spike dimensions are drawn true to scale. However, I did use my modeler's license to "beef up" some of the components, namely the tie plate shoulders, which are roughly twice as high as the prototype, along with the actual shape of the spike head itself. I figured that when these details are printed, they should result in looking "correctly proportional" rather than being actual scaled-down version of their prototypes. We know that in model railroading not everything translates well when reducing things in scale. You can also see the tab/tenon/rectangular pin that is to be inserted to the corresponding holes in the laser cut wood tie base. I'll try and print a batch tonight to see if the design works. Cheers, Donnell

Is there any possibility that you would sell just the tie plates for the use as tie piles, on track equipment, in the bed of RR company trucks, ect ... ?

There are already available HO scale (and other scales) scale cut tie plates. These are easy to use a look great. www.larkspurlaserart.com/tie-plates
