Just some shots of what's on my desk this week........... ACF X71 redux. I happened to have a non cushioned ACF draft gear set in my parts bin, easy enough to exchange and repaint/weather. A pair of Triangle Pacific cars, one Moloco, one Athearn. Have a great Sunday, Mark Hills

Nice weathering on those. These three wagons arrived from Germany on Wednesday for the Arosa Bahn. This is a spur of the Rhätische Bahn that runs from Chur (pronounced "Coor(s)", like the beer) to Arosa, passing Peist, Langwies, and Litzirüti, before terminating in Arosa high up in the Alps. 2nd Class coach and baggage car or Gepackwagen: 2nd Class coach: And another in RhB red:

Did a rudimentary light weathering job on an old Atlas hopper brought to you by tamiya, as i used their weathering powders and flat finish on this one. This is a "proof of concept" for how i want to fleet weather my hoppers.

Great work and photos by those who posted them, and amen to the earlier comments!
The Jersey Central changed the reporting marks on some of its freight cars from CNJ to CRP in an attempt to lessen the taxes it had to pay to the state of New Jersey. That didn't last very long.

I finished some new cars this week. First is the GACX 4550CF Covered Hopper car that I have been working on for the last couple of weeks. Finished it by painting with Scalecoat II UP Covered Hopper Gray paint and lettering it with Prime Mover Decals. Car was used hauling grain from various locations on the Erie Lackawanna. Next I buiilt and painted another Intermountain Railway PC&F R70-20 Reefer kit. Substituted metal Yarmouth Models Sill Steps for the extremely fragile plastic Sill Steps. Painted with Scalecoat II Daylight Orange, White and Black Paints then lettered with Herald King Decals. Car was one of thousands used in transporting fresh produce out of California to the rest of the country, also used in conjunction with the BAR to haul potatoes out of Maine. Athearn Erie Lackawanna SDP45 and SD45-2 with a general frieght running on the Strongsville Club layout. Thanks for looking! Rick Jesionowski

Last little bit of work on the decoder swap. We opted to swap out the water tanks and turn the system from an open/vented one, into a pressure style (it uses an actual radiator cap). We found one from a scrapped GP38, it was easier to just swap out the entire tank since the hood was off (8 bolts, 4 fittings) then have a new cap cut into the old one. Equipment rack with the load regulator, compressor controls and traction motor blower. The only thing not on a terminal board or with plugs - the engine room light circuit. I tell you, it really is no wonder why EMD spanked all the other brands back in the day. These things are just so damn simple to work on. 75-80% of this was done with a 3/4 wrench and a set of screwdrivers.

So, the funny part is, kind of.
The fuel tank bolts for these are actually under the engine oil pan. I was chatting with the owner and he mentioned "Yaknow, I think I would like to find a bigger fuel tank to put on.."
"You know you have to pull the engine out on these to change the fuel tank?"
"I think this fuel tank will work just fine."

Photos of D&H twin hoppers in the 70s range from fresh paint to cars so heavily rusted no marks are really visible on the sides, with all sorts of variations in lettering including restencils right over the rust spots. I have a couple of undec Atlas cars I picked up just to try to do a couple of really beat up cars with.

I definitely have some heavy jobs in mind, especially since my era bleeds closer to 1970 or so. i have some athearn PWV hoppers set aside that i'm gonna beat to hell based on a photo of some on the ironton. This was probably my first weathering job in 15 or so years, figured might as well go easy and subtle at first.

Got hurt at work and haven't done much modeling. NYSW unveiled a heritage painted unit, NYSW 3024 done in the silver with red stripe like their original RS1's from over 50 years ago. Took the Athearn SD40-2 that i had already painted in NYSW black and yellow, stripped it and painted it in a close matching silver. Waiting on decals. 20230423_171039 by Tripps Pics79, on Flickr 20230423_171032 by Tripps Pics79, on Flickr 20230423_171122 by Tripps Pics79, on Flickr
