I just purchased an Atlas HO GP40 with the dual mode #342 decoder. It has the jumper plug which plugs into the decoder to determine if it is analog or dcc. The loco runs fine in analog mode but when I move the jumper for dcc operation I get no response when I try and identify the loco as a new loco in DP. I put it on my dedicated programming track and tried to pull up the address but get the no ack response. Has anyone experienced this and if so any suggestions on what might be the problem. I have sent emails to Atlas without response. I can replace the decoder with another decoder but wonder why the loco would run fine in Analog but not DCC. Fellow I bought it from claims he tested it in both modes and it functioned properly.

Does Decoder Pro read the decoder type? If so then try to read the CV's of the full decoder that should give you the address, if not do a factory reset of the decoder. That should reset the address to 3. You could also try programming a new address as well to check the DCC operation. If you know the assigned address then my next guess is it is programmed to a consist address, this should show if you can read all the CV's thru Decoder Pro.

DP does not identify anything. In fact the error message is no decoder detected on programming track. So how can I reset decoder? Or check CV’s?

Funny, I had this same problem with a dual mode B40-8 yesterday. I bought it new years ago, ran it a couple times, and left it on the shelf, so I know the address was never changed. A reset with CV8 did nothing. I figured maybe the board was hurt while running it on DC. I ended up gutting it for a Tsunami decoder.

Thanks. Think that is what I will end up doing.

Some of those were really primitive, as far as abilities. They could only be programmed to a 2 digit address, and would not read back. The "state of the art" has passed them by so far it has difficulty seeing them in its rear-view mirror.

IHMO it would not be worth keeping even if it DID work. Tear it out and put a 2023-quality decoder of whatever description you prefer in.

Any of my older atlas 4 axles, 1 B40-8 and 2-8W, except 1, Amtrak B40-8w buzzed like crazy…if they ever leave the mothball tote they would be candidates for new decoders.
I used the pair of B40.8Ws for track cleaner train power…1 CMX and 2 Centerlines need a good push…
