For a long time, I have relied on Railroad Pictures Archives to research photos of engines and rolling stock. I've found it to be much more expansive than RailPictures since that site mostly focuses on engines. Anyway, I read a post on Reddit yesterday about the owner of the site passing away and the domain expiring. It was non-functional for a while yesterday, but seems back up today. Has anyone heard anything about this site potentially going away? It's just way too useful to lose.

It was a rumor. Site owner Tim Heummer shared that the servers needed to be reset.

even for locomotives, RR Picture Archives is far more useful than Railpictures. There are a lot of nice roster shots on RRPA while Railpictures is more focused on artistic photography for the most part. Don't get me wrong, as a railfan photographer who leans more to the artistic than the 3/4 wedge roster shot, there are some fantastic photos on there. But a lot of them are useless as a modeling resource.
RRPA going down somewhat periodically is just a thing that happens, I never think much of it - I just try again later.
I'm not entirely sure what was going on the latest time, but a couple friends of mine were messaging me saying they could not get in and were getting all kinds of errors, while at that exact moment I was browsing the site looking for photos of specific boxcars with no trouble at all.
Finally, as a rule of thumb: take anything you see on Reddit with a MASSIVE grain of salt, especially if it is something that can't be verified.

This does raise a question about succession planning for a number of the major model and railroad websites, Atlas Rescue Forum among them.
Many of the websites started as personal projects of an individual. The illness or death of the website owner could lead to a site being shutdown and the loss of much valuable information.
I wonder if sites such as RRPA have a succession plan in place?

I think Railpictures is pretty useful for getting loco and/or train consists. Rrpicturearchives doesn't do that.

I like both sites but Railpictures is very useful for better photos of the correct color shade for locos in my experience.

You also gotta love the age of the rumornet, I mean internet. No one should ever be allowed to post such rumors.

For roster type shots I prefer Railcar Photos/Loco Photos site, excellent freight car and loco roster shots
