Are diesel locomotive antennas painted (Sinclair)?

Hard to tell in the pics if they are covered with diesel exhaust or come in a gray color.

They are typically an unpainted aluminum color. Since it's an unfinished material it collects grime easily. Even new I wouldn't think of them as shiny, but over time they get darker with dirt, dust and soot.

Thanks, guess I'll paint the ones on my h.o. Alcos grimy black. That's the color they appear to be in the pictures

It’s a pretty good guess that most radio systems are installed in new locomotives after delivery by the railroad with what ever antenna is needed for the railroad specific communications systems.

Here's the most common antenna on locomotives prior to modern PTC antenna arrays being installed. Sinclair ST221Cast aluminum, not normally painted when installed.

They are probably painted when the loco is repainted, I have one that is painted Conrail blue.
