Picked up some steam to flip at a local auction Saturday. Dual mode sound in most of them.
I did a quick test on them today with a DC transformer as there was no sign of any DCC control in the boxes of stuff and most worked but I had trouble with a few.
A Bachmann Climax, red box with big clear window, sound works but no motion or lights. Will try a decoder reset but do these have any gear issues to deal with?
An old IHC Premier 2-10-2. Sound kind of clunks when power is turned on but that's it. No paperwork in this one. Being Mehano I'd be surprised if it won't run, but also not surprised if the electronics are messed up. No paperwork in the box, so I will have to figure out how to reset the decoder and go from there.
And a Mantua Classics 2-6-6-2T, one of the last ones from the Model Power ownership era. This one probably has no easy answer as it's not a factory sound, it has a TCS decoder added and it had no response at all. Way too many variables, thinking the first step is get it on the programming track and see if it responds to an address change. It's also painted/weathered pretty badly so it may just become a parts engine.

Climax has some serious gear issues. I got a new one from a hobby shop, took it home, and the gears were trashed. Bachmann sent a replacement, which worked--for a week. I sent it in and they sent me a different model. The no motion or lights sounds like the address is in a consist, try cv19 to 0 and see what happens. I remember the Mehano having something really cheap (MRC?) for a sound decoder. It's been well over a decade since I've had any MRC decoders, but I think some of them needed to have an F key pressed to get them to start. The Mantua/MP if it had a factory decoder, probably had an MRC, as well. I think the reset for the TCS motor decoder is cv30 to 2.

Well, it does run but it probably has a bad gear as in reverse it has a big lurch that shakes the main body. All I did was reset the addresses to 3 and they all ran. The TCS must have a keep-alive in it as the sound and light continued for a few seconds after I lifted it back off the track.
The expletive mice ate the buttons off my Prodigy controller, though, I didn't realize it at first as I wondered why they were so low and uneven. Then I looked at it closer. I wonder if MRC will sell me a set of buttons.
