A light drybrush of weathering paint has been applied. Chalks would also work well here.

Affix all side/end wall assemblies to the underframes. Take your time to align everything square.

All body sections have been mounted to the underframes with Weldbond and allowed to dry. ACC wouldn't work here as you don't want fumes and you also need time to move the sections into place.

Cut out the body, end and storm door windows.

Then cut out the cupola windows. Whew, eight windows per cupola means 40 pieces!

I'd imagine dropping one of those windows on a smooth floor would be more challenging to find than a Kadee coupler spring. At least you have more clear material should it happen.
Beautiful job on these.

And finally, the cupola windows have also been installed and dried, using Weldbond.

Stepping on up in the project, windows appear to have come out well.

Re-drill all clogged railing holes.

Here are the first small hand-bent end railings. I think my jig is around here somewhere but couldn't find it for the photo. You can safely imagine this work as very tedious and time-consuming regardless of how it is done.

Merry Christmas everyone, I hope today is a joyful day for you.
There was more elapsed time in between recent photos due to the tedious nature of the work. End railings were installed first with the top pieces. The photo only shows four pieces of small wire installed but remember there are two ends x five vans = 40 pieces.

Whew, all 40 top end railings are installed and dried. I suppose this might help prove how crazy I am if that wasn't already abundantly clear LOL.

Crazy good, abundantly clear. I drilled the holes, hand bent the grabs and hand rails for a 4 loco group of Alta’s RS-32s that I did for my home road. I appreciate the effort.

All the strong light and long days have moved away from this hemisphere, accounting for the darkness in this and the next several photos. I have good work lighting but not so good for photography at this time of year. In this photo we see the 20 lower end railings hand bent due to their unique shape. Commercial parts are very expensive, difficult to source reliably and are not the right size for this application. More elapsed time.

Whew, now ALL the end railings have been built, installed and dried. 12 per van for a total of 60 small pieces. Your mood needs to be right to accomplish this.

Of course, those 60 railings all need paint, along with steady hands, good lighting, vision, white paint pen and mood. More time elapsed, sorry about the dark photo.

More time elapsed, sorry about the dark photo. You started building these cabooses after breakfast and now it's getting dark?

OK this is my last apology for photo darkness. I photoshopped this and it still looks like ASA 400 film. Anyway, reason for this one is to mention this is a good time to carefully hand paint the white step edges. Each one of these vans was slightly different in this regard, consult prototype photos of your chosen van TAKEN IN YOUR MODELLING YEAR.

^ LOL nice try but no. Remember there is all the end railing/ladder/brake wheel detail yet to add. I'm hoping to be finished by end of January.

Bring back the storm doors and tweak them before installation. This includes trimming and bending the hinges and re-gluing any windows that pop out during this process. Not difficult but still tedious and finicky.

"still tedious and finicky." Those guys can really mess up all the fun... ASA 400, Agfachrome? Used to love Tri-X, it had soul. Pushed to 3200 with Accufine developer.

Finding photos "taken in your modeling year" can be difficult. I can be satisfied with a 2-3 year spread until something closer comes up.

Happy New Year everyone, may all your wildest dreams come true this year. Here everything is ready for storm door installation, two doors per van x five for a total of ten doors. Steady hands, good eyesight and lighting needed here as well. Don't use ACC as the fogging needs to be kept away from the windows and you need time to set the doors in place correctly. Above all, remember to have fun with all of this. Do something else for a day or a few if you're not in the right mood, BUT keep at it and maintain steady progress generally.
