Love that combine load, Matt. Hope you get the layout up and running again real soon. I keep getting called for night trains so I'm a little nocturnal these days, hence the late post. No actual modeling from me this week, only virtual modeling. I'm working on a 3D printed model and decal project covering Nippon Fruehauf (and similar early Jindo) containers. I showed some renderings of the Fruehauf containers a couple weeks ago but I have since added some other variations including 45' containers. In an effort to avoid "painting myself into a corner" and making models for which no decals exist as I have done in the past, I have endeavored to fill in some gaps Microscale et al left behind. All but the orange NYK and blue Hanjin containers are designed specifically for my printed models; those are just decals I was able to create because I am using the art on my other containers. Anyway, here are some very much in-progress screen grabs of the 70s and 80s decals I've been working on this week: Besides the schemes shown here I've got early Hanjin and Yang Ming dry containers along with Hanjin, K Line and Hapag-Lloyd reefer schemes drawn. It may be a few weeks before these get printed. I just got through both girls' birthdays and another semester of college tuition, so the well is a bit dry at the moment.

Little late posting this week but, here is what I got done this week! Another pre-painted Bowser PRR H21a hopper car kit, I did hit it with dullcoat to get rid of the shiney finish. A different Bowser hopper car, the 100 ton variety, painted with Scalecoat II Rust paint and lettered with Herald King Decals. I think I remember reading that these cars were made with Corten Steel, which rusts and the rust coating stops further rusting of the car, which was then lettered after the rust formed. Also Corten steel is stronger and longer lasting so the hope was they would not have to reskin the cars after the sides deterioted due to the acid in the coal. An Atlas 5347CF FMC Boxcar kit, painted with Scalecoat II NP Dark Green, Black and Silver paints and lettered with Herald King Decals. The Green Mountain Railway invested heavily in IPD boxcar boom of the late 70's and early 80's and kept their cars in service even after the boom went away. Received the final 5 cars of the "General" from Walthers, so I took the completed train to the club for a little run last weekend. Have a great weekend! Rick Jesionowski

Glad I am not the only one that is late this week. Took me till today to get the photos done. First is a Rapido F59 stripped and repainted to NCDOT. Got mine done now they can go ahead and do them. Next is a car I found pic of on the internet and just had to model it. Meet ICG 569007. A Southern repaint of an original NS combo door boxcar. Last are the two cars I will be giving a clinic on how to build at the Carolinas RPM on September 23, 2023. Great work everyone this week and Tanks for looking.

Your decal artwork looks great, Ryan. Is the next step to send the artwork files to a printing company that can print the color white? Jonas

Your decal artwork looks great, Ryan. Is the next step to send the artwork files to a printing company that can print the color white? Jonas Thanks Jonas! Yes, from the beginning I've used Precision Design Company (www.pdc.ca) to do the printing for me. Bill has been a great help from my first attempts to produce artwork he can print. Now I've got a repeatable process I use and a template so that my decals turn out good each time. The one thing Inkscape cannot do (yet) is allow you to export color settings for print (ironic for a product with "ink" in the name), but I just indicate which Pantone code I want assigned to each color on the sheet and for a small setup fee Bill fixes the sheet and prints it. I use the sample Pantone color index decal sheets Bill sells so that I have an actual color swatch in hand to match to the model before I choose the color for anything that's not black or white. Another key thing to remember is to convert all the objects - especially text - to paths before exporting the artwork. It's highly likely that a graphic artist like Bill has all the fonts I might use on a project already installed on his computer, so his program might not have to make a font substitution, but if it does the results can be unpredictable and undesirable. This possibility is eliminated if you convert the text to paths before exporting. As I've gotten into projects that require unique lettering (like modern Union Tank Car decals or Southern Pacific well car decals for example) there really aren't any fonts out there that match all the details of the prototype lettering, so I've had to create my own fonts to complete the decal artwork. Certainly in those cases nobody will have the exact font I used so the program will make an unwanted font substitution. The easiest solution is converting the text to paths after the artwork is complete. If you are getting started making decals with Inkscape and need some help to get pointed in the right direction send me a PM. I'm far from an expert - I make plenty of mistakes for Bill to correct! - but can probably help with the basics. Edit: here are some photos of the actual sheets PDC printed and the decals applied to the models so you can get an idea of the work Bill does:

Some decals for Phoenix Container Line "PCL" would be appreciated. Those containers were very common on EL piggyback trains in the mid-70s.

It's an attractive and distinctive scheme. With some more angles and higher resolution images I'm sure I could come up with something.

I think the PCL container was included in an old Microscale set that would do several container companies. I would need a bunch of them and don't want to have to hunt down several sets and not use the rest of the decal sheets.
