I started down the black hole of 3D printing tonight. I have not purchased the printer yet. I am still trying to decide which one to get. I did download the two slicer programs and loaded up one of my .stl files to play around with it and get myself familiar with the programs.
I feel it is time to stop procrastinating and get into this field. If I want the parts I need, I am going to have to go through the learning curve and get my own printing done. I am tired of waiting weeks for parts when if I would just learn it myself I could have them in a matter of hours.
I think it is going to be fun though and may push me out of HO-scale and into O-Scale. It would be fun to see 1/48th scale parts come to life. Maybe not though. HO is loads of fun too.

If you go smaller, you can 3d print entire cars.
I mean I guess you can in HO scale, too, but you might be limited by size.
What time are you going to buy? The ones that use resin are much easier to operate, and have a much higher resolution. The downside is that they use resin, and if you aren't careful, you can develop an allergy to it if you aren't careful.
I have a resin one, and as soon as I can get it setup in my garage, I plan on printing a whole bunch of stuff. Until then it just sits on a bookshelf collecting dust.

I will definitely be getting a resin machine. I am still comparing what is available and watching as many videos as I can on each one. Currently leaning toward a DLP over the LCD. Just not 100% sold on it yet. It is going to be about a month or so before I make the plunge. I want to get information overload first and then decide which way to go.

It's amazing what a $400 printer can do. This boxcab diesel project from a year ago as example

Nice project highlighted there.
Curious, Baikal regarding seeing the bus in your Logo de Jour...

Searching for photos of "articulated bus" turns up some really odd stuff.

I'm very interested to see what you decide, I too am looking at resin printers. I'm just having a hard time deciding and Shapeways is just to expensive for the quality of what you get.

Evan, For the past week or more I have been watching as many 3D printer reviews as I can. I almost decided on the ANYCUBIC Photon Ultra 2 DLP printer. Then over the weekend I think I found the one I want to get. The UNIFORMATION GK TWO. It is a bit more expensive than most. About double or so, but it boasts some really good features. Really good features. Especially the heated vat. The drip shield on the build plate and a really unique way to level the build plate. A decent looking carbon filter. Flip up lid that will not lower if you accidentally forget to secure your build plate on the Z axis. There are some good reviews of it on Youtube. So far I have watched four of them. I am pretty much sold on this one.

Looks like a winner. When I was shopping brands a year ago Anycubic came out on top- now there's new models & prices.
The Photon Ultra 2 DLP can be had for $399 (no resin)? If so, even better.

I started out with Anycubic printers, and really hated my OG Photon. I went to Elegoo and never looked back.

Hi Question for you 3D print experts out there: I've heard some good things about Tinker CAD . . . . .
Would that be a good start for folks just getting into 3D Printing and other model railroading applications (like decal art) ?
I heard that TinkerCAD is a free program made by Autodesk and might be similar to the full blown AutoCAD program?

I'd suggest Fusion360, you can get a free personal use license and it does a nice job.
