Western Maryland ACF 50’ Precision Design Cushioned BoxcarI really don’t know a lot about the Chessie System or its constituent railroads but what I do know is that I like some of the paint schemes they applied to their freight cars in the 1970s. For example, the cursive-style lettering the B&O used on some of their large boxcars, the bright yellow ACF covered hoppers, and the solid black coal cars with the “C&O for Progress” herald. Atlas has produced a nice ACF 50’ Precision Design boxcar with the stylized Chessie Cat herald. With a few detail mods and some paint work, I tried to emulate the appearance of one of these cars after a few years of service. Both of the B-26 and B-28 classes of Western Maryland’s Precision Design cars had sliding sill cushioning devices. Atlas draft gear detail leaves a bit to be desired so I substituted Moloco’s cushioned draft gear for the stock parts. Tangent’s Stanray coupler lift bars, brackets, and air lines were added as were Kadee #158 couplers. At some point, the prototype had its Youngstown doors replaced by panel doors. Kadee’s 6-panel Superior door was slightly modified to fit the Atlas door opening and was painted with Mr. Oxide Red Surfacer. For trucks, I used Moloco’s 70-ton ASF Ride Control roller bearing sideframes (TRK4) and matched them with Tangent .110” wheels. I used a combination of Smokebox Graphics, Highball Graphics and Microscale decals to patch-out and update re-weigh data and to add new COTS panels, ACI placards, and wheel dots. Tamiya Clear was applied over the new decals to smooth the edges and then a coat of Tamiya Flat Clear was sprayed over the entire car. It was lightly weathered with a mix of Tamiya Khaki, Flat Earth, and Flat Clear.

Good morning from partly cloudy and mild Northeast Ohio! I managed to finish a couple of cars this week! First up is the Moloco GATC RBL that I modified to fit the DT&I car I wanted to model. I contacted Nick Molo and asked which of his kits would match the DT&I car so I managed to acquire one. I lowered all the ladders and brake gear as the car was built in 1968 and would not have a roofwalk. Also the DT&I car did not have ladders all around like the kit, so I replaced the ladder at one end with Kadee grab irons. Car was painted with Scalecoat II Armour Yellow, Boxcar Red and Silver paints and lettered with a mixture of Herald King and Mask Island decals. The 1090 above the reporting marks indicates the car was in canned good service for Campbell's Soup plant in Napoleon, OH. An Atlas Kit that was painted in my favorite covered hopper scheme, it was painted with Scalecoat II UP Covered Hopper Gray Paint and lettered with Mask Island Decals. The Wabash usually assigned these cars to the Archer Daniels Midland elevator in Decatur, IL. A GP35, C-424 and a U25B leading a mixed freight on the Strongsville Club layout. Thanks for looking! CB&Q 212928 is an old HC-1 hopper that by my 1969 era had been renumbered and repainted for company sand service. It is an Intermountin with a mix of decals and National B trucks. Prototype photo here. www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=4484234SP 177802 is from the latest Tangent release. I went for subtle weathering on a paint scheme that was only 4 years old in my 1969 era. It has gotten a repack patch, some chalk marks, and picked up 'Herbie' in four years of travel though. Nice work all! Mostly finished weathering this Intermountain Potacan hopper. Waiting on some Inventive Models couplers to replace the Kadees and then I'll call it done. This car is a great example as to how you cant judge the color of a model with a screen, it is wayyyy less bright orange in person, gotta love relative color rendering!

Since it was a little light this week, more "blue bucket" shots in the clouds. Replaced the couplers and added more of the general grime to the model since last posting. Also added the modern 3 panel COTS over the old ones.

I don't post to SPF very often, but I just wanted to share my CSX Genset 1 by Atlas. I've always wanted an HO genset, specifically a genset II, but when I saw this for $40 on ebay, I had to get it. The numberboard area is kind of ugly, though; I'm currently trying to find a Genset II cab. The I and II have very different long hoods as well, but I don't really mind rewriting history to get rid of the ugly short numberboard area. I've already contacted Atlas with the part number, hopefully they'll have one on hand. Also.. this one might recieve a different shade of blue in the future, if you catch my drift.

Thanks to all who have posted on this thread so far.
For those not familiar with the Beverwyck brewery in Albany, NY, it was owned by the longtime Democratic political boss of the city -- not its mayor but the "power behind the throne", so to speak. For decades every tavern within city limits was expected to keep it available for customers. Athearn did a beverage truck lettered for it years ago.

Finally found a drawing of the P&LE 149-G-Gondola and making fast progress with the 3d model. But wow, this is going to be a huge beast.

Oh wow! If you’re willing to make those available, I would love to model a few in CSX service. There are no models of P&LE gons available for the cars that CSX inherited. Dave

Dave I’m doing the cars that have been P&LE 15000 to 15249, I guess they’ve been with CSX until the all came to Oregon. I’m going to finish and test the design first, then I’ll think about offering it or not. On one hand, I have little interest in selling it, on the other hand it’s too much work to give it away. We’ll see.
