Morning Sun Books just sent out an email that they will cease production of all printed books in 2024. All Digital after. Didn't see that coming, but I guess folks don't want to pay $80 for a book these days.

That's unfortunate. I much prefer to have an actual book to look at.
Mark.

That sucks.
I've got three "Volume 1"s from Morning Sun, and I've been really looking forward to the "Volume 2"s.

This felt like a long time coming, the quality of some of the books has dropped in the last 10-12 years. Still gonna leave a void in the hobby that hopefully someone attempts to fill.
Hard to hold court in a layout design meeting pointing at prototype photos and yelling about how we are doing everything wrong with an iPad, won't have the same oomph behind it.

I just now saw this thread; thanks to ChessieFan1978 for starting it.
Like Mark and Ed, I find the news very disappointing. I, too, prefer the actual printed books, though I've never been able to buy as many as I'd like. I hate have to go online to find as much of the information as I do as it is.

It's not that people don't want to buy books, it's that people don't want to buy these books. Morning Sun's prices have been steadily rising while the quality has been dropping. I think that is the main issue. I don't have any of their books, but I've got friends that do. To be honest a lot of the photos aren't that good, and especially with their freight car books the breadth of coverage is not great, and/or there are blatant mistakes.

It would be ironic if Morning Sun still expected $80+ for their books even in just a digital format! Cutting production costs and still raising prices for the consumer seems to be the norm for many industries these days.

That's a pretty broad brush, especially since you don't have any of their books. I have about 20 or so of their books, mostly from the "Color Guide" series, and they have proven to be an extremely valuable modeling resource. Many of them are authored by some of the most respected folks in the field: Nick Molo, James Kinkaid, Steven Johnson, Jim Eager, Craig Bossler, Tony Thompson, etc. I'm certainly no expert, but I doubt these authors would let many "blatant mistakes" slip into their works.
As for pricing, books published 20-25 years ago were priced at $49.95 to $59.95; current releases are $69.95. Yes, prices have gone up in the last two decades, but a $10.00 increase in two decades does not seem crazy wild.
I really hate to see this happen.

Interesting. I will not buy "digital books" myself just like I won't by digital only music releases. Sure, I digitize my music but only from hard copies that I own. Everybody has to make their own choices. People with my views will die off and make way for the new ways, However, as long as I'm still kicking, I will support actual products that you can hold on your hands. Technology is over-rated. Look at people today. Look at the "progress" and control mechanisms that come with it. No thanks. Your last 4 sentences say it all which I totally agree with. I like their books as I have a few.

Nov. 4, about 9:47 p.m., EDT, which I'm still on until 2 a.m.
Morning Sun Books sent me and others on their list an email this afternoon asking for preorders on one book to be published this month and three to be published between Jan and April of 2024, apparently in hardback, with the usual pre-order offer of $10 off list and free shipping in the USA. I emailed them asking for clarification and have not yet received an answer.

Morning Sun is asking for preorders on untitled books?

Just saw this. I am not a fan of just pdf's either, though I use them all the time for work documents. That is different.
I prefer printed books, and at least one of the ones they just recently announced is one that I need.
I am very sad about this; I know book sales have been slipping. Dealers at the Timonium shows have told me so.
The post here is appreciated; my local dealer had heard something and mentioned it last weekend. I'll be getting together my most likely final order(s) for Morning Sun books (sometimes I can get a better price from certain online dealers on certain books, so I might place more than one order).
