Yesterday, I took my Rapido RSC-14 over to my local club for some photos and a break-in run: Rapido RSC-14 by James Bilbrey, on Flickr Before that, my son and I went to a small local model railroad show. I picked up a NWSL Quarterer and Puller, a Wheel Works '34 truck kit, Vol. 1 of Strapac's Rio Grande Diesels and couple BLI H2A hoppers. One vendor had a "grail locomotive" that I had been half-heartedly looking for over the past couple years - an Empire Midland Models Southern 4501. The good news was that the price was right - only $50. The bad news was that it was painted a horrid bright candy-apple green. And the Ugly was whoever painted it, painted EVERYTHING - the boiler, the valve gear, the wheel treads - E-V-E-R-Y THING. I'm pretty sure that a previous owner had it on the shelves as a display piece and never ran it.

A friend and I talked ourselves into a deal: if he got all the stuff, I'd build some Bitter Creek wood boxcar kits for both of us. I'm doing 2 LV cars and 2 Michigan Central cars. Here's one of the LV cars just as I've started detailing the body. Gotta love that trademark LV left-opening door!

If you could get the word into the right lists I'd bet there is a market for all the variations of fox trucks that were used for quite a few years. There might be some still under some snow removal equipment.

I replaced the LEDs in one of my genesis cabooses: i.imgur.com/tdlgvvO.jpg[/img]Just used some prewired red 0402 LEDs. Pulled the end off, remove the light pipe, took the lens off, then ran the LEDs wire through the hole for the light pipe. Works great, however getting enough paint inside the housing was difficult. Might have to root around for something better. I also ended up breaking one LED so one of my cabooses will have to wait a while as I only got 10 LEDs. Also did some work to some geeps: 1774 got some decals and will be sealed before weathering, the 9 behind it got fitted, and the GP18 is back together. However I got the wrong speaker for it, as it’s for the 9.

I replaced the LEDs in one of my genesis cabooses: What's that? I can't believe that there is a tool I haven't bought. Yet.

Here is what I managed to complete this week. First up an Atlas FMC 5077CF Double Door Boxcar kit, painted with Scalecoat II Boxcar Red, Silver and Black Paints then lettered with Herald King Decals. The WP purchased these cars to replace the worn out PS1 boxcars used in the lumber trade. Next, the PC's Sam Rea shops built slightly larger clones of the GATC 4500CF Covered Hoppers resulting in these 4600CF Covered Hoppers in the H51, H51a, H51b and H51c classes. They were used in grain loading traffic and the different classes resulted from the outlet gates used on each class. Car is a Tangent Kit, painted with Scalecoat II UP Covered Hopper Gray paint and lettered with Champ Decals. I also did a quick build of a Bowser H21a hopper car and dull coated it to remove the shine of the factory paint job. Soon the H51 Covered Hoppers will soon be infiltrating the solid train of PS4785 Covered Hoppers pulled by a pair of SD45's on the Strongsville Club Layout. Have a great weekend! Rick Jesionowski

I finally finished building an old Walthers kit modeling a 50" Airslide Hopper. I painted it with Tamiya Racing White TS-7 from a spray can. The Tamiya paint had a great gloss sheen onto which decals could be applied. I then applied Microscale decals. To make the color closer to that of the prototype, I added two shades of gray Panpastels after spraying the model with Tamiya TS-80 cleat flat from a spray can. After applying the Panpastels, I then sprayed the car with another coat of Tamiya clear flat coat TS-80 before adding the weathering followed by yet another coat of Tamiya TS-80. The underside was weathered with the same Panpastels and black Tamiya Panel Accent Color. The trucks were painted with black Rustoleum Automotive Primer covered with the same gray Panpastels, followed by a coat of TS-80. The wheels were painted with Polly Scale Roof Brown paint. I added a half ounce of weight to bring the car up to NMRA standards. This was a fun model to assemble. The parts went together nicely and the car seems to run well so far. Here is a photo of the prototype:

Very nice flat and a Cat! That new D8H looks perfect on the older WM flat. Great work on the D8H. Checked the Clever Creek site and it said some sanding and cleanup. How much work was required to get that printed model look that good?

How much work was required to get that printed model look that good? Thanks Tom. All I did was clean up where the supports were removed before primer and paint. I did add some wire grab irons and operator controls as well. Under close examination, there are some fine striation lines on some surfaces, plus the large striations you can see in the photos toward the bottom of the tracks.

Here is another Cat on a flat I'm working on. The D7G Dozer is from a very crude resin kit. One of the worst I have attempted, but beggars can't be choosers when it comes to mid 70's heavy equipment.

Quite a difference in the D7 vs D8. The D8 is really nice. The D7, challenging, I'm sure.

Finally doing something with my hands again – preparing a P2k SD45 shell for Plano radiator grilles. I am eager to fin out how they compare to molded plastic ones.
