Just picked up what I think is a John English 60' baggage car shell. It's pretty well detailed and well proportioned. Any ideas on what prototype might come close?

Yes! Not a dead match, but strikingly close.

cpr4200 and Ed,
The GN car looks longer than the John English / Hobbyline / Penn Line 60' model, and it rides on 6-wheel trucks.
I keep hoping that Walthers (or perhaps another maker) will finally make a good mostly polystyrene HO model of a standard NYC 60' two-door baggage car. Walthers has had no trouble selling PRR baggage cars, also used by a few other lines including LIRR, over the years; so I would think the NYC cars might also be winners for the firm. And they would be reasonably close to D&H cars.

I, too, did wonder about the GN car being longer--kinda looked that way.
But it's from the series GN 253-258, with an internal length of 60' - 1 1/2"--60' - 9" over "framing"--64' - 7 3/4" over coupler faces.
It's possible the Penn Line is too tall. The GN car is 14' - 0 3/4", railhead to roof. It might be revealing to couple it to a Walthers heavyweight.
I agree about the NYC baggage. I gave up and bought a brass one. They were not uncommon on the SP&S in the mid-forties, and one is plenty for me. Not so much for NYC people, though.

That's WAY beyond "Hypocracy". More like: "Huh?"

Those cars were sold by Penn Line, then I think Varney got the tooling and it went on to Life-Like. I know LL got the streamline cars which shared some parts with these.
Because of when they were made it's likely while they may follow a prototype they're condensed in length to look better on 18" radius curves.

It's really pretty close to that GN car I linked to, which was rebuilt from a 60' RPO; only 9" short. The doors need to be enlarged slightly, the ends need to be rebuilt, and the clerestory ventilators need to be changed. Floor and underframe will be scratched, have already ordered Walthers 6-wheel trucks with roller bearings. The shell might be Bakelite, not styrene.
Bought the GN Historical Society's bundle of head-end car articles, which has excellent documentation and drawings of these cars and many others.

Looks like fun, for sure. If I didn't already have my fun projects lined up for the next 161 years (just look in the closet & crawlspace & garage), I'd probably be in, too.
I think a LOT of 60' baggages were rebuilt from RPO cars, which can show up in the rivet patterns and various mods on the sides.
