Good morning from mostly cloudy and cool Northeast Ohio! Got a couple of cars done this week. First up another Stewart 14 Panel Hopper car, painted with Scalecoat II Black Paint and lettered with decals that Brian Banna allowed me to purchase from his supplier. The NYC in the late 50's was on a program to purchase more 70 ton hoppers replacing worn out 50 ton hoppers. This is the 3rd car I have finished and I have 5 more to go. Next up a Details West combo door boxcar painted with Scalecoat II ATSF Mineral Red, Black and Silver Paints then lettered with Herald King decals. The Details West car was about only correct for this class of UP boxcars. Below are some in progress pictures on a modified Robbins Rails 60' Greenville Boxcar, that I am changing into a ACF prototype, first off had to change the doors from plug style which I carved off and replaced with a pair of doors I had left over from an Intermountain 5283 boxcar kit, then I carved off the side sill and replaced it with a deeper sill matching the ACF drawings. I also sliced and diced the underframe to change the wheelbase from 41' to 46'3" and used Moloco ACF Coupler pockets for the ends of the car. Still have to remove all the side panel rivits and add various detail parts. A pair of Intermountain NYC F3's with a general freight running on the Strongsville Club layout which will be open this weekend along with Historical Society Grounds. Thanks for looking! Oh man, the ARF is going to pull your "I hate Rapido card" with that one!

^ Agreed, the awareness of that was an unpleasant feeling which I decided to ignore. These are beautiful Rapido models that were exceptionally well done.

All great photos! That Candian passenger train really looks nice! This past week, I have not had much time for modelling, but I experimented weathering using only Tamiya panel accent paint. All I did was highlight the weathered areas with black and brown paint. After it dried overnight, I sprayed the car with Tamiya XP080 dull coating. I am really getting to like the Tamiya paints. If you use the Tamiya panel accent paint, be sure to apply it in a well ventilated area. The stuff really has a strong odor. Here is a view of the other side of the car showing more of the roof.

I finished up my B&O H-20 coal car last week. This car started out as a Kadee 2-bay car decorated for the Monon. I stripped the lettering, replaced some of the plastic details with bronze wire, removed the roping tabs, added Plastruct L-shaped styrene to simulate the angle-iron reinforcements added along the top-cord of the car. After painting it black, I added decals from various sets to match a prototype picture of the very same car. Weathering occurred between some decal layers. The prototype cars were former Reading I believe. They were re-bodied with a larger capacity so the model is very much only a stand-in. Also, the prototype picture of the car showed it pretty much in original paint circa 1964 in a 1977 dated photo. I model 1981, so I used some modeler's intuition to model the car as if it had finally be re-weighed by 1981 and gotten a U-1 wheel dot as well. I replaced the brake wheel with an Ajax, added sergent couplers, and made wire cut levers. B&O 235839 by Freight Engineer, on Flickr

Some oilpaint (I like ABT501 - Starship Filth) with odourless thinner gets the job also done and smells a lot less. The only downside is that you have a little more work to be done before you can apply it.

Building the covers to go on the RDG GHy I scratchbuilt a while ago: That was a whole process... I tried it all styrene, didn't have enough "stringers" to hold the shape. Tried printing them, had a devil of a time getting the dimensions to work out for some reason. Got annoyed and set it aside for a while, then printed a few more bad attempts. These covers are a hybrid, styrene with printed support shapes.

No photos but I did have a bit of luck at a local [in Middle TN] Train Collectors Association (TCA) show yesterday. When I walked in, a friend warned me that it was a bust, saying that I would probably spend more on gas than anything here. That was largely true until I spied a tote on the floor in front of one vendor, which ended up being a mini gold mine. I left that table with an assembled Lines West MILW Thrall caboose and rebuilt 2-bay hopper kit, a P2K MILW 4427 Cu.Ft. hopper, and an Accurail/Ribside Cars 40' boxcar kit for $90 total.

The lettering on that NYC hopper is amazing. Too bad the set is apparently not available to the general public.

You just never know with a show. I did a tiny, new show at a small museum rather than the RIT Tiger Tracks show. All of four vendors and one was just people dumping an estate, plus the museum itself selling their excess trains. I actually bought a ton of things for way too cheap, including an ancient Tenshodo brass 0-8-0 for all of $20. Most of what I got is nothing anyone here would be into but I should do pretty well flipping things. I haven't ID'ed the switcher yet, it's similar to one I see for sale as a Rock Island engine, but has a couple of boiler top detail differences. Maybe if we get some brighter daylight I can post a photo or two. It's not a big money engine, maybe $75 if I clean it up and replace the missing tender truck.

I see the ACF Centerflows could do double duty as automobile carriers!
And what kind of shoes are on those M&Ms?

Wonderful modeling, guys, both serious and humorous!
Matt, are the EL, Frisco and Southern GSC depressed center flats also from Class One Model Works? What was the source for the longer, four-trucked depressed flat(s)? And for the loads on all of them?
danpik, lots of fun as usual. I assume the autos are on a rack car on the track behind the MMX covered hopper. I believe that in German Straub means "dust"; a Straubsauger (dust-sucker) is a vacuum cleaner. Note that in German au is pronounced to rhyme with the English ow sound as in ouch! And except around Hamburg, an st at the beginning of a word is pronounced as sh is in English.

12/12/23, close to 9 a.m.
I apologize for posting a bad German translation last night. The German word for dust is Staub, not Straub. At the moment the free online German-English translator I used a few minutes ago is undergoing maintenance. I'll post what Straub actually means in German a little later today. Some of you may remember the major league player Rusty Staub, who while playing for the Expos in Montreal was nicknamed something like le grand Orange in Quebecois French.

Matt, thanks very much for your answers to my questions. During tonight's Athearn live Train Tuesday session I posted on the chat that I liked Chessie System's "kitten in a C" logo, partly because it echoed famous ads from decades earlier, but that I'm not nearly as fond of CSX. CSX freight cars had CSXT reporting marks, at least for quite a few years, because ones ending in X were for non-railroad owners of cars, and CSX belonged to Central Soya, at least until that firm stopped using it.
