Okay, I'll bite. What is the story here. You are a CP guy, and this is a CSX caboose. A good looking caboose none the less. Enquiring minds want to know what's up?

A pair of Mainline cars across the bench for this week. The second of the bulkhead flats done minus a light weathering, same as last weeks car with Tangent trucks and ACI plates added. This PC car got Athearn trucks and a tangent ACI plate

Hi GP40P-2, thank you for liking the CSX shoving platform from my vault of US caboose projects. While it's true I do have an era that I generally stick to, I don't want to so wrapped up in that to the point of not being able to occasionally enjoy other subjects. Lots of cool cabooses were made in the US also, I hear the Erie ones are especially sought after! [cough, gevohogger, cough]

One DOES need to appreciate a nice caboose…but, never have seen anything that nice on CSX…or much else these days in my part of Michigan. The Plymouth sub has sparse traffic. GR East.

hudsonyard Really nice work on that flat, I have a few I need to work on. I am working on this Tangent PRR G43, about halfway done with the weathering. Need to dirty it up more and add more chipping next.

jacksong1218 can you share how you got the shading on the side of the car to look so natural? I've got about half a dozen of these cars that need weathering and I don't really know where to start.
Thanks, Mark J. Reading PA

I spent the day topping up smoke fluid and blinker oil. Nice weathering job on the wheels and truck frames. Particularly the springs. The striping on the arch doesn't look very prototypical though.

Thanks, Mark J. Reading PA Thanks Mark. First I used the airbrush to do an overall slightly lighter brown than the original car, and then I added some dark gray to that mixture until it was a grayish brown color. I sprayed that in the corers taking care to not get it on the ribs or the top. After that I did a matte varnish, and then hit it with the AK NATO wash and then some shadow brown oil paints in the same areas. Here is a image showing the paints I used, as well as my updated progress with some more oil paint work and acrylic chips and rust spots.

I'm a little bit late for Sunday, but I figured I could sneak these in. I don't think these warrant an entirely new project thread; they can just stay as one-off photos here. I have the BNSF business car train from Walthers. The cars came out more than a year ago, but I just picked up the last few recently. A lot of hobby shops like Lombard and Overland still have cars in stock; these sets don't seem to be moving quickly. Topside they look nice. I used to be skeptical of the 'real metal' plating, but they've grown on me, especially sitting next to silver painted cars from other brands. The issue is on the underside of the car. The underbody details are the steam-heat version, which are not correct for the ATSF or BNSF business cars that were produced in this run. I've been working on converting my cars to HEP equipment and installing DCC lighting kits. Here are some shots for diner Fred Harvey. The equipment boxes are in black primer, but I need to make a few more modifications and reprint them. These are the larger equipment boxes under the kitchen end of the car. From what I can tell, one is a water tank and the other is a generator. The brake equipment and fuel tanks are under the dining area of the car. I don't have the CAD finished for that stuff, so I will print and construct those parts at a later date.

I went through the same thing converting ATSF-era Pines sleepers to AMTK-era HEP cars. Walthers made its passenger cars very modular, and has enough parts available if you cannibalize stuff that I could upgrade the cars pretty simply .

That looks like an Amtrak Budd 10-6 sleeper. I think I have that car as part of a collection to model the Amtrak San Francisco Zephyr.

The Pines-series 10-6 sleepers were early HEP rebuilds to run with Amfleets on sort-of long distance trains like Panama Limited and North Star. Also did the baggage. Ironically, swapping trucks made both the sleeper and the baggage more accurate, but I eventually subbed correct trucks on the baggage. Still waiting for a P30CH...

I've noticed that the Budd Baggage's in Amtrak sell for silly high prices on the bay.

I must have great luck getting those baggages, I have two phase II ones that I managed to snag for $20 a piece at a show, had a phase III one to but traded it to a friend for some stuff (forgot what). Can't find an SDP40F to save my life though. slowfreight What would the heritage of that car be? I'm using walther's cars to stand in for a '78 builder, I think I'm really close but don't have power.

Athearn did 4 runs of Amtrak SDP40F's. I had to wait for the 4th run for the version with ice breakers. They have been on the bay for quite a while but now only one showing are price insanely high.

It's former ATSF...just like Pines sleepers, they were early rebuilds for the HEP era, losing skirting when they got Phase II paint, but I think keeping steam lines in parallel to HEP. Walthers put the wrong trucks. Should have the GSC 41 N11 but with the vertical dampers and clasp, not disc brakes...I originally used the diagonal damper sleeper trucks until I found the right ones. Otherwise, the details are nearly 100%.

Been home injured from work since mid december and going nuts. So i'be been trying to do projects that i put off or renewing old ones. Also been asked by two people to build some models and re-paint some. NYSW 3018 and 3022 were built and painted by me like in 2010 or so. Both athearn rtr models. Details have broken off over the years and the thick paint had me worried it wouldn't be stripped down to plastic. Well 24 hours in castrol super clean and they are clean right to bare plastic. All the glue broken down from details i added so its like a fresh build to me. Very happy. 20240106_150752 by Tripps Pics79, on Flickr 20240111_160207 by Tripps Pics79, on Flickr 20240111_160215 by Tripps Pics79, on Flickr Also got some atlas spare parts from an alp45 that are the same parts on an alp46 on the prototype. I started cutting and fitting them on my alp46 shell but will not go much further till i have the frame/drive. 20240110_155013 by Tripps Pics79, on Flickr Finally decaled this SD70ACC. Trucks were redone with newer genesis sideframe but were not assembled when i took the pics 20240102_185031 by Tripps Pics79, on Flickr 20240102_185054 by Tripps Pics79, on Flickr
