in my quest to replace standard couplers with Kadee 158's, Intermountain has been killing me with their coupler boxes. This time I've been working on their 40′ 12 Panel box cars (mostly Great Northern). The coupler box covers appear to be inserted into the coupler boxes with plastic pegs. I had to use so much force to get them off that the peg had broken off from the cover. I ran into similar covers with their ACF 2-bay hoppers as well, but those I was able to get off without breaking. Anyone able to share any tips to get the covers off without breaking them?

Honestly, I would attempt to break them off. That way you can drill and tap them for a screw. You could try to work them loose with an exacto chisel blade, but a screw-on lid will be much easier in the future if you need to adjust or change the couplers. I find that twisting them usually leads to breakage. If you can pry it loose by working either side, I think you will have better luck removing it intact.

If you're going scale-head, consider substituting Moloco draft gear. I did this on a couple of IM 40' cars. Easy, looks good, and available in 10-packs.

But the improvement outweighs any downside of not being 100% correct when you look at the Intermountain part.

I would suggest 0414 kit. It is the best for most cars without cushioning. Nick owner, moloco If you're going scale-head, consider substituting Moloco draft gear. Thanks for the guidance. Glad you stopped by. Can you tell me what the difference is between DG-0414 and DG-0416?

Pat, They are basically the same. The difference is in the side key detail one is welded the side and the other is rivetted. Nick I would suggest 0414 kit.
