I have a couple of Kadee 50’ PS1 boxcars, and I really dislike the spring trucks that come with these. Has anyone had good luck with a drop in replacement truck without redrilling or filing the bolster?

Kadee makes cast trucks now. Look for the ones which are labelled HGC -- high gravity compound. These are a drop-in fit for the original Kadee sprung trucks.

cera2254, do the Kadee boxcars you have come with trucks having actual metal springs? If so, those were produced some years ago. More recently Kadee has used "HGC" trucks on their assembled cars; those have simulated springs that I and at least some others think look more realistic. Those should fit on the bolsters on your cars without trouble. Sooner or later I hope to substitute the newer trucks for my older Kadee trucks with the metal springs. My trackwork is not perfect, and I'm content to use the RP25 standard wheelsets with the traditional tread width. Others on this forum prefer more realistic narrower tread width.
(I hadn't seen the first two replies to your email which were posted shortly before I posted mine.)

If you don't want to use the Kadee wheelsets I recommend not using the newer Kadee trucks, as other wheelsets don't fit them well.

Tangent trucks are the best. Swap them out for a pair.

A guy whose layout I ran on a few times years back was insistent on putting sprung kadee trucks on ALL of his cars. Even went as far as to put "softer" springs in them each individually, his equipment ran extremely well, but you could see the kadee wheelsets he used were starting to break down and leave residue all over the layout.
He may have been onto something because there was a branch on one peninsula of the railroad that had code 70 rail, the cars with the sprung trucks would rock and sway down the branch and not derail, looked neat.
