My copy of Diesel Era just arrived today. I don't think it's a coincidence that the cover feature is Part 1 of the Alco C415, history, rosters, owners, etc.
But the other half of the magazine is Part 1 of the SW1001. Also a coincidence?

The never ending quest for the SW1001. It used to be the C-415 but that unicorn is coming.

So what's with that roof mounted radiator fan on one of the models? Did that really happen, or is it an homage to the AHM C-424?

Diesel Era used to be actually printed by Paulhamous Litho in Montoursville, PA (published by Withers Publishing in Halifax, PA). The people at the printer certainly know the folks at English's/Bowser (the owner was a frequent retail customer at the train store). There have been other very timely diesel articles such that it seems clear there must have been some coordination between the model-making folks at Bowser and the proto-diesel-data folks involved with Withers.
Today Diesel Era is owned and printed by White River Productions in Missouri. This time any coincidental articles may be just pure coincidence.

How many different cabs were there on the 1001? I'd always heard that that was the reason that no one until now had made one. Other than the Athearn which is all but a foobie. I only recall one modeling article in one of the smaller press magazines which combined an Athearn hood and a Cannon cab.

Guess I'm going to have to pick up a copy, cause quite honestly, I don't understand the hype in regards to these locomotives. Not hating by any means but maybe I'll learn a thing or 2 and make some sense out of all this.

The only thing it shares with anything else is the trucks. The frame, hood, cab, everything is different then the SW1000/1500 to suit the lower ride height.

I was under the impression the hood was the same as the 1000 and they used the smaller early switcher cab instead of the high cab from the 1000/1500, is it not quite that simple?

From the wiki it sounds like a parts bin special:

For guys like me and 12bridge, we saw 1001s on the Long Island Railroad and New York and Atlantic for years. You could have an entire production run with just the schemes they wore on LI.

Sounds like a perfect ST Museum Quality release to me.

Steve 230 is just enough to disqualify it from Museum Quality status, but not enough to put it into the regular production timeline. In other words, it'll likely linger forever unmade (like those EL cabooses...)

Maybe with the similarities between the 10 c32-8 and 49 b32-8 someone will make them.

No point in having a roof walk if you can't take a stroll on it, from time to time. View's pretty good, too. But no shade in the summer.

Actually we did kind of get a C32-8; Rail Power made a shell that fit Athearn GE-C chassis. Obviously if you wanted Museum Quality you had your work cut out for you, but if you don't mind blue-box quality you could have one.

I know that. I had the RailPower shell and most of the Detail Associates etched parts. But the OMI chassis was going for about $160.00 at the time. So, given that cost and the amount of time to level-up the RailPower shell, it wasn't worth the investment for me. A ScaleTrains Rivet Counter quality is desired.

With the number of models getting produced that people have insisted that no manufacturer would ever produce, I don't think anything is fully off the table.
