I received my new Atlas GP38 today (CRI&P). It has etched grills on top of the fans which look really nice. It's been a while since I bought and Atlas GP and I believe this may be a new feature.
Paint was excellent, but ... (there always seems to be a "but"/whine in these type of posts) Atlas is still using those grossly oversized caricatures of windshield wipers. It necessitates replacements but jeepers, Atlas, how about upgrading those as well?

It really is too bad about those wipers.....especially since when these GP38s and GP40s were initially released they came with very well done wipers...good enough that I used them on other locomotives.

They were Chinese clones of the A Line ones, I wouldn't be surprised if they sent a cease and desist order to Atlas. But Atlas and their factory should do a lot better, A Lines got expensive and I use lots.

I also replaced the stock Atlas GP38/40 wipers. I found some from Atlas that they used on the various GE models. Much, much finer.

Saw them at Lombard hobbies yesterday, a little different paint job, and dynamic brakes because this is the "new" Rock Island, the shortline that bought the RI name.
Still tempted to buy them.

I had not bought an Atlas GP38/40 in quite a while. I saw an Atlas video from the recent Amherst show and the Atlas guy said the etched fan grills were new. They really are quite nice. I will see if I can get a photo.
