Was working on cleaning up a Proto 2000 GP20, and managed to loose a couple of the little washers that go on the end of the worm gears. Any idea where I can get replacements?

You can get replacement worm gears from Athearn and salvage the washers. If you measure your existing washers, you can probably find some similar generic parts at the hardware store or on eBay.

If it isn't in the big yellow book, it doesn't exist!

Should be the same on any Proto 4-axle with the Athearn clone trucks, too. Or for that matter on the Athearn trucks themselves.

The Kadee grey and red washers can be used in a pinch. Even though their holes are slightly larger than the shaft, they won't interfere with the gears underneath the worms.

I have an Atlas boxcar that the Kadee washer won't fit over the lip, even with me filing the washer hole bigger. The only solution is to file the lip down flat.

What you want are Athearn thrust washers, part number: 140-99201.

In the early days of the hobby, everyone had a press and appropriate dies to stamp out their own washers.
We've never had it so good!

Not to go off topic, but would those washers help alleviate chattering in locos in consists? I have a bowser C628 mated to an Athearn SD40 and Scaletrains SD45 that chatters.

I'll give that an unqualified "maybe". The worm (not the worm GEAR) should have minimal end play. Too much, on a bad day, can show the behavior you describe. Adding the proper thickness of thrust washers can eliminate excess end play. You want the "gap" as small as possible WITHOUT having any binding. Closing up this gap might fix the problem. Or it might not. Could be that your decoder needs adjusting. Or something else. Ed

If you're using DCC, you can adjust motor speed up slightly. I remember mine ran a little slower than other brands, and it always acted like it was going down a hill while in consist.
