It seems Walthers has purchased the scalecoat paint line and is taking orders. Good news for all who loved the paint.

Certainly not what the page for Scalecoat on Walthers' website says.

Walthers has NOT purchased Scalecoat.
There is a new owner working on resurrecting the line and Walthers has reopened the product line to backorders. There is no ETA on product delivery.

Looks like someone on ebay is selling their NOS bottles for $20US+ a piece.

Looks like someone on ebay is selling their NOS bottles for $20US+ a piece. The price on Walthers for special order on most colors is about fifteen dollars.

Ted COO Norfolk Terminal Modern Narrow Gauge The only online reference I can find is a speculative 2023 post on Model Railroader's HO forum, and that post doesn't cite any sources either. Does anyone have anything more solid than a friend of a friend at a hobby store?

Interesting that all the forums were posted to about the same announcement. Mass rumor mill attempt.

I heard Walthers will be moving all paint production to Milwaukee.

I heard the EL cabooses were coming soon. Where's the bat signal?
Further to my prior message, I find it very interesting that the ebay auction appeared at the same time this rumour broke. Some of those bottles of 25 year old paint have a $50US asking price, plus shipping, IOW $100CDN for a small bottle of old paint. I can get 4x that amount in brand new craft paint at my local store for $2CDN all-in.

so in other words, other than this latest rumor about Walthers precisely nothing has changed.
Just, "someone" is trying to aquire the line of paints and hopefully bring them back. Which has been all that has been heard in many months.
Scalecoat is dead, people. Start shovelling.
The sooner everyone accepts that the sooner we can all move on with our lives.

I saw some scuttlebutt somewhere that the guy who bought it from Minuteman is known for running things into the ground, so unless he's sold it to still someone else, I wouldn't hold my breath. But of course I read it on the internet, so take it with a grain of salt, maybe we'll all be surprised.

This really spread like wildfire, every corner of our little online modeling communities were talking about this. I never used scalecoat and i've heard mixed reviews depending on who you ask, friends of mine that paint brass for $$$ swear by it, others absolutely hate it.

I used it decades ago and it didn't look bad even brushed on. Been a long time since I painted anything though. I kick myself for not buying a can of the PC green spray the last time they were at Springfield, I have one brass PC transfer caboose I want to paint and I don't see anything in Krylon or Rustoleum that looks close enough.

I was at Tommy Gilbert’s in Gettysburg PA today and out of the blue he told me Scalecoat is back and will be available through Walthers. Sounds like Walthers does not own but will distribute.

Hoping that this is not just a rumor that's yawing and pitching down the line like an E60CP. For a metalizing basecoat color foundation, IMHO, Scale Coat II is (was) outstanding! Smooth, hard finish with an impressive high gloss. I may have been the person that purchased Minute Man Model's last batch of NYC Gray mixes ( thinking it was nine, 2 oz bottles), but am hoping that this high quality product will be available again soon. If so.........hopefully the same formula compositions will be used and not "altered" to a weakened version due increasingly stricter environmental-related mandates. ;-)

Chevrolet and GMC offered a green for Suburbans and pickups that was somewhere close to a two- or three-year faded PC Green. That would have been in the late '60s but the paint may still be offered.

To all the "master members" who thought it was funny to act like condescending jerks with your smart ass replies it seems many people are beginning to confirm that scale coat will be back. Most of the other forums are reporting the same thing. And to the person who insinuated I had a stake in this, or just starting rumor....well ill take the high road.

Most of the other forums are reporting the same thing. This "master member" was not replying to you nor addressing the Scalecoat question at all. Sometimes it's NOT about you. I do confess I can't find the part where someone says YOU started the rumor (if that is what it is). Nor do I see mention that you had a "stake" in this. Could you please point that out? Ed
