Joshua, thanks very much for starting this thread. I agree with you that the forthcoming Walthers Mainline RS2s look good in the photos Walthers has posted.
However, all four D&H units the firm has chosen to model had steam generators for passenger service, as most D&H RS2s did; and I see no sign of that in the photos. I'll have to check online, in books and in photos and slides to see what kind each had. Some had the type installed when built right next to the cab; others had separate stacks on the short hood. RS2s were the D&H's main diesel-electric passenger power -- of its RS3s, only one was equipped with a steam generator -- before the arrival of the Atlas PAs. Also note that the Walthers Mainline models will wear the first version of the beloved blue, gray and yellow lightning stripe livery, which had no numbers painted on the long hood and small condensed yellow ones at the center top of both ends. I'm not yet certain whether any of the RS2s still were without road numbers painted on their long hoods when their air cooled turbochargers were replaced by water cooled ones; all originally had the lengthwise, not crosswise, exhaust stacks.
Note that the forthcoming Lehigh Valley units are the only ones with the same road numbers on both models without DCC and sound pre-installed and without that.
I think that aside from the D&H locos, the others modeled in this run were used only in freight service. If I'm wrong about that I'd welcome correction.

. . . I see no sign of that in the photos. They are Mainline locomotives so there won't be prototype detailing. They are doing the two major stack variations as well as undecorated models. The detail kit is extra. Ten grab irons for about thirteen dollars, drill bits not included - but linked in the description. (That was hard to type while I was laughing!) The drive seems to be the current Walthers drive which continues to be the best on the marked.

One of the new Valley numbers has particular significance to my home area so I ordered that one with sound. After they arrive, I plan to open it up to see if a shell swap is possible and will post my results unless someone does before.

The LV numbers are the only ones to be painted this way.

FWIW Walthers got back to me and they THINK the new mechanism should be able to fit legacy shells but won't know for sure until they come in.

Got my new RS-2 with sound today. Sounds pretty darn good! Yes, you can swap the shells.
Edit/PS: After some further running I remain impressed but wish they could have cleaned up the cab/mechanism- you can see right into the circuit boards inside. Might have to fiddle a bit.
