Back when I decided to transition to the acrylic paints used by military, game, and figure modelers my pusher steered me toward sets. My pusher has retired, darnit, but I still look at sets when I need a new color. Below are some sets which I choose from Amazon with Prime delivery. Prices are going to mostly be better at military/figure/game dealers. I mostly deal with Michigan Toy Soldier which has a creaky website.

The Spanish paint companies are big on sets. I’ve listed three of the major makers. But there are other Spanish paint makers with product in American stores.
Vallejo is the 1000 lb gorilla and has lots of sets. Again, Amazon prices. An individual bottle of Vallejo Model-Air paint costs anywhere from $5 to $9. In the set pictured below of weathering colors, the price per bottle drops to a bit more than $2. Some sets even cheaper.
AK Interactive is the 700 lb gorilla. Their acrylic/urethane resin paints cost more to begin. $8 to $12. In the set below, the paints are a bit more than $3.10 each.
The 500 lb gorilla is Ammo by Mig. Individual prices are all over the place from $5 to $12. In the set below, the price per bottle is about $3.50.
Crossing the Channel; Games Workshop’s Warhammer Citadel figure paints mentioned in another current thread are made in the UK. They are formulated for game and figure painting by brush. I’ve had good luck thinning and airbrushing, but they are pretty much at the bottom of my list for new paint. $7 to $12 for individual paints. The sets also contain a couple of tools (excellent quality) but I figure the actual paint is less than $3 in these sets.
There are two USA paint makers in the military/game/figure field. Mission Models and Monument Hobbies Pro Acryl. Pro Acryl is pricey and has very pricey sets. It might be about the best available acrylic paint. Individual bottle are about $10 with prime delivery. In the set below, the price is about $5 because the set does not have prime delivery. Cheaper, a bit, from military dealers.
Mission Models paint is my current favorite. Military modelers are their customers, mainly. Of all the companies reviewed here, MM is the only one with a railroad name on ONE bottle. Tie Brown. Sets are all but phased out and weren't a bargain. Individual bottles from Amazon Prime or direct from Mission are pushing $10 a bottle. NOTE, Mission Models bottles are double the size of all the others mentioned here. (no photo)
