I had been email Shane info a while back and he said they were coming. There we are! Going to be expensive for you, Jim? Very. The GP40's are coming end of year, Dec 31, but maybe early 2025, and these are due Oct 31. Time from announcement to expected deliver date is shorter for the SD45's than the GP40's, probably because the tooling is already there. I already have the RTR Athearn SD45's and actually Athearn did a decent job on them, paying attention to some specific details. The side frames match the orders (first 10 had low mount brake cylinders and the 2nd order had high mount). They have the Mars signal light on the nose and plows match some, but not all. Athearn also offered the D&RGW SD45 #5333 which had a reverse color herald on the nose, which was unique for the SD45's with large heralds. That one is a keeper. The pimary down side to the Athearns are the Rail Power shell heritiage. The shells were upgraded but the rear hood latch detail remains the same. I have run some of the Athaern's and they are smooth and quiet, reminding me of Katos. Athearn did a run of 3 small herald (5017, 5019, 3024) and two runs of large herald including 3026, 3029, 3031, 3033, 3036 and 3038. The road number series 3026, 3027 and 3028 and 3036, 3037 and 3038, were all pool SD45's for the Kaiser Coal Trains with the UP. I see only two small herald from Scale Trains which are from the 2nd order, 5030 and 5335, high mount brake cylinders. Guessing they figure the Large Herald will be more popular so offered more road numbers, 5327, 5331, 5334 and 5337. So there is only one road number overlapping the Athearn numbers offered some years back, #5331. Shane did say there may be one or two overlapping after I sent him all the data. I've put in an order for 3, #5330 and 5335 small herald and 5334 large herald to start with. None of the first 10 ordered by the D&RGW are in this run, they all appear to be 2nd order. The 5327 and 5337 were Kaiser pool so will think on those. I have the UP and D&RGW from Athearn to run together. Speaking of Kaiser coal, Athearn Genesis recently released the UP EV caboose with the green K featured on the Kaiser UP cabooses - picked up one so far. And I have some 35 or so of the D&RGW/UP Hi-side gon's so I can now field a complete Kaiser coal train. Athearn did offer UP SD45's in the number series for UP's Kaiser Pool Power, two in the earlier 4 digit road number and one in the 2 digit. They had 3 brake cylinders per truck. Those UP SD45's were renumbered from 4 digit road numbers to 2 digit around 1978 (from memory).

Glad for the Rio Grande units, I'll probably get 3 as well, some of the rest of the release is certainly baffling - No UP, GN,NP, CB&Q as especially SP - WTAF Scaletrains?

Yes, regarding UP, to run a Kaiser coal train, you'd need one or two UP in the consist with the Rio Grande, as was typical. I may just stick with my Athearn as long as they run well and call it good. The only thing about SP not being in this run is I want some of those too and too much financial hit at once. Strangely, ScaleTrain's has offered so far SP in the first order with low brake cylinders and standard windshields (or was for 50 IIRC), and the SD45R's. The most common SP SD45 is still waiting go be offered. Athearn did them in the RTR version using the RPP shell but the terrible plow, and BLI did them more recently but no.

ScaleTrains needs to tool the early cab with the extra side windows. This is also useful for the early Soo Line SD40-2s that I'm after.

Which RRs had those? SOO & NP/BN any others?

Though, the SD40-2 cab wouldn't use the same slide as the pre-Dash 2 lines. But for the 736-756 it would work.

still no WC or UP after 2 runs is mind blowing.
Scale Trains must be allergic to money or something.

ScaleTrains needs to tool the early cab with the extra side windows. This is also useful for the early Soo Line SD40-2s that I'm after. NP also had the handrails "curl" down where they connect to the cab. www.trainpix.com/BN/EMDORIG/SD45/6401.HTMI'm still baffled they used the same groups (6543-6555/6556-6567) as the last run of BNs. Leaving the much larger groups between 6472-6542 untouched. But then after looking at the recent SD40-2s*, picking numbers may not be their forte. (*6325 became the bicentennial, 6339 became 6916 bot only good for like 3-4 years; imma renumber mine) I'm likely in for a DRGW SD45 to go with the GP40 I ordered and the SD40T-2 I wound up with.
