Here is a recent photo of one of my older projects. The Lackawanna boxcar started as a Branchline DL&W welded boxcar. Branchline did an excellent job on the DL&W lettering and paint. I made some upgrades to the car including making some minor modifications of the sidesills, Kato trucks, A-Line stirrups, a Kadee brakewheel, Kadee #178 couplers and a Plano etched metal running board. Many of these Lackawanna cars lasted in these colors well into the Conrail era. For a later PC era I added ACI labels, consolidated lube stencils and reweigh paint outs. I weathered the car with PanPastels, pencils and an airbrush. These Branchline boxcars were a welcome addition when they were released back in the late nineties and still look pretty good today.

May Day, about 12:49 p.m., EDT
Beautiful modeling, Tom. It brings back memories of seeing many freight cars still in full DL&W paint in 1981 at or near Syracuyse when I rode Amtrak from Boston, Framingham or Worcester, MA, to Rochester or Syracuse, where I switched for a bus to Geneva, where I believe I was met by a shuttle van or bus to take me to Keuka College south of Penn Yan for a summer program. That was two decades or a little more after the Erie and the Lackawanna merged.

Very nice, Tom. A good eye catcher that doesn't scream for attention.

Thanks everyone! I saw one of these Lackawanna cars in 1983 in my hometown sitting at a spur at the Westvaco papermill so I have always been intrigued by these cars. I'll have to dig up that photo

Any advice on the paint matching of the upgrade parts?

Any advice on the paint matching of the upgrade parts? I think I used Polly Scale Red Oxide. Today I would try Mission Models Red Oxide.
