If you google the plant there is a Facebook someone has some info on these. Quite a rabbit hole indeed. ,No idea about the engine exhaust stacks I could find, tho

I'd guess something similar. Most coal operations aren't going to spend $$$ to install side pipes like on a '72 Camaro without good reason.

If I remember correctly either from X2200S or somewhere else, the stacks were turned to the side for smoke or spark prevention in the plant area. Seem to recall they had internal spark arrestors.

Also note cover over radiator so may also may be to prevent rocks, coal from going g down stacks.
