Asheville, North Carolina: Tangent Scale Models is pleased to announce the second production run of our third all-new freight car release for 2024: the HO Scale Greenville Steel Car Company 6000cf 60’ Double Plug Door Box Car System! This is the latest Greenville Auto Parts box car product in our line of “family-appearance” box cars that introduce market-leading design and tooling practices, geared toward consumers who desire the most accurate models with a “family-appearance” between prototypes manufactured by the same builder.
The 1960s freight car building boom was fueled by demand for specialty car types. A key type were 60’ box cars designed for dense auto parts such as engines, bumpers, axles, and glass. Greenville Steel Car was a box car innovator, first introducing these 60’ auto parts cars in 1963. Greenville’s box cars had a distinctive “fishbelly” sill design, and centered Youngstown Steel Door Company double plug doors with a 16-foot door opening. But here are where the similarities end. Greenville produced these box cars with two significant body variations:
• Greenville Steel Car’s production from 1963-1964 had a distinctive “narrow” wheelbase design, and was ordered by DTI, EL (2 orders), DT&I, DTSL, GBW, N&W, MP, MKT, MP, NKP, NYC (2 Orders) and WAB
• Greenville Steel Car’s production from the 1965-1966 period changed to a “outset” wheelbase design which made them look more like the box cars produced by the other carbuilders. These later phase cars were ordered by CP, DTI, EL, GTW, LN and SLSF
Fourteen railroads initially bought these cars, with some of them receiving merger-related repaints and some of them changing hands. Most of these workhorses remained in service into the 2000s.
The Tangent Scale Models Greenville 6000cf 60’ Double Plug Door box car is a dimensionally-accurate replica of the real car, designed from actual blueprints. Our Greenville 60’ system includes multiple bodies and design details to handle two different truck centers, corresponding prototypical sill and plug door changes, and accurate roofwalk and end appliance configurations appropriate for the era of the model. Additionally, we include a beautifully-rendered “Diagonal-Panel” roof, complete with accurate Stanray ends and the Greenville “rivet rows” on the sides of the model. Underneath, the car includes prototypical brake piping, appliances, and our “near-scale” draft gear box including side “key” detail. These cars are ready to roll with three possible Tangent-accurate truck and wheel options. Our ready-to-operate replica is finished with coupler lift bars accompanying Kadee® scale couplers, sufficient hidden weights, and CNC-machined wheels to ensure the model operates as good as it looks.
Our May 2024 introductory production of our Greenville Steel Car Company 6000cf 60’ Double Plug Door Box Car System includes FIVE all-new RTR paint schemes plus FIVE undecorated options. Check them out now at www.tangentscalemodels.com
And as usual, all our offerings below feature photos on our website showing the actual model and the prototype cars! Here are our schemes:
- Detroit, Toledo & Ironton DTI "Green Repaint 1978+" provides the modelers with a great example of Greenville 60’ Double Plug-Door cars in a refurbished, repainted version. In 1978, Detroit, Toledo & Ironton refurbished most of the 1966-built cars at the railroad’s Jackson OH Shops. The work concluded with a spectacular repaint into the dark green scheme! The model features the correct carbody details for January/February of 1966, which represents the original build dates for these cars. These cars were the first cars Greenville produced with the wider 46’ 3” truck centers. DT&I retained the high ladders on the B end of the car since they did not cut down the brake appliances. DT&I did remove the running board, and of course our model picks up on all of these small details, even on rebuild paint schemes, which is something Tangent has tooled all of the necessary parts for. If you look at the doors, you will see the double pair of auxiliary crank arms added to the prototype cars. The Tangent model carefully duplicates these modern features. The DT&I lettering is looking good on that green carbody and includes the accurate Return-To-Detroit routing. Underneath, the model has an accurate Keystone Center-Of-Car cushioning (COCC) underframe with truck mounted brake hardware. Yes, that means no brake cylinder part – the underframe brake piping routes to small brake cylinders on the brake beams of the trucks. Also, check out that beautiful Stanray diagonal panel roof – DT&I painted it green. On the ends, the model is equipped with an accurate Ajax power brake, Modern brake wheel and Apex brake step. This model is equipped with 100-Ton Barber S-2 trucks with rotating Timken caps. These models are ready for auto parts service on your railroad and available in four road numbers! SKU 33015
- Detroit & Toledo Shore Line DTS "Delivery Red 11-1963" replicates the gorgeous Detroit & Toledo Shore Line paint scheme as-delivered in 1963. The prototype cars entered service in November of 1963, and feature the 41’ 3” narrow-truck centers with shorter sills. The Tangent model executes these same prototype features along with a beautiful Apex-style running board and high ladders for the era. On the end of the car, you will notice an accurate Ajax power brake and modern brake wheel. The brake step is Morton, while the crossover platforms are Apex-style, matching the D&TS prototypes. The underframe features an accurate Center-Of-Car “Hydra-Cushion” setup with body-mounted brake gear details. The truck brake beams match this body-mounted brake cylinder configuration. This model is equipped with 100-Ton Barber S-2 trucks with rotating Timken caps, just like the prototype. The D&TS “Expressway For Industry” graphics stand out on this model, with all lettering carefully created and executed on this box car. And yes, that includes the one-inch data reminding brakemen that this car has roller bearings and to set the brakes when the car is set out! The model is accurately lettered with a return route/code of 190, for Ford’s Monroe, Michigan Stamping Plant. These models are ready to haul chrome parts, bumpers and more on your layout and are available in 6 numbers. SKU 33016
- Green Bay and Western GBW "Delivery Green 9-1963" shows off the as-delivered GBW paint scheme for a 10-car order. The prototype cars were delivered in September of 1963, making this group some of the earliest Greenville 60’ cars built. As a result, they feature the 41’ 3” narrow-truck centers with shorter sills. The Tangent model executes these same prototype features along with a beautiful Apex-style running board and high ladders for the era. On the end of the car, you will notice an accurate Ajax power brake, modern brake wheel and corresponding high retainer line. The brake step is Morton, while the crossover platforms are Apex-style, matching the Green Bay and Western prototypes. The underframe features an accurate Keystone Center-Of-Car Cushioning “COCC” setup with truck-mounted brake gear details. This model is equipped with 100-Ton Barber S-2 trucks with rotating Timken caps, just like the prototype. This Green-Bay-Route beauty’s paint and lettering are carefully replicated down to the smallest detail. It’s all there, and it’s all correct. The models are assigned to Ford’s Fairfax Transmission Plant in Cincinnati, Ohio, (that’s Code 168) just like the real cars. These cars are available in 4 numbers. Don’t miss out! SKU 33017
- New York Central NYC "937-B Delivery Green 1-1964" continues our dedication to NYC modelers, replicating an order totaling 41 cars in the classic NYC Century Green and Black scheme. These cars were delivered in January of 1964, so they were some of the last cars to feature the 41’ 3” narrow-truck centers with shorter sills. The Tangent model executes these same prototype features along with a beautiful Apex-style running board and high ladders for the era. On the end of the car, you will notice an accurate Champion-Peacock 1600 power brake with separately applied short release lever and modern brake wheel. The brake step is Morton, while the crossover platforms are Apex-style, matching the NYC prototypes. The underframe is equipped with an accurate Keystone Center-Of-Car Cushioning setup with truck-mounted brake gear details. The model has Tangent’s All-New 100-Ton Barber S-2 Plain Bearing trucks with accurate journal box lids for the NYC. (Seriously, road-specific journal box lids. Who does that? Tangent does!) The NYC paint and lettering doesn’t take a back seat. From the big and bold “cigar-band” herald down to the most intricate data like the NYC-specific triangle paint code stenciling -- It’s all there, and it’s all correct. These NYC 937-B cars have a return route to the NYC’s Rockport Yard in Cleveland Ohio – i.e. Cleveland Engine. It’s time to haul V8 engines to or through your railroad with these Century Green beauties. Available in 8 numbers! SKU 33018
- Nickel Plate NKP "Delivery Brown 11-1963" gives modelers the as-delivered classic brown scheme. The prototype cars were delivered in November of 1963, and feature the 41’ 3” narrow-truck centers with shorter sills. Fun fact: These NKP cars were part of the same lot as the D&TS cars also part of this Tangent release – and share many of the prototype build features. The Tangent model executes these same prototype details with a beautiful Apex-style running board and high ladders for the era. On the end of the car, you will notice an accurate Ajax power brake and modern brake wheel. The brake step is Morton, while the crossover platforms are Apex-style, matching the NKP prototypes. NKP lettering is one of those things that deserves to be done right, and this car proves to be quite interesting in that regard. Careful study of the prototype NKP paint (as applied by Greenville Steel Car) shows multiple styles of lettering. All of this is carefully reproduced, from the extended-roman style reporting marks, GSC’s own block stencils for door data, machine-punched 1” stencils for trust lettering and more. In fact, if you look closely at each side, for the “R” and “L” next to the doors, you will see Greenville used NYC’s stencils. No kidding! Tangent has carefully duplicated all of these paint and lettering features. The model is accurately lettered with a return route/code of 190, for Ford’s Monroe, Michigan Stamping Plant. These NYC&STL replicas are available in 6 numbers. SKU 33019
