Saw the press release today from Shapeways of their bankruptcy declaration. They offered a large number of 3D printed model RR items. Sorry to see them go ---- Ken

This has defiantly been the news of the world in the modeling community today.
Unfortunately, this was a long time coming. I got into the 3D stuff at the right time when Shapeways popped up, and it really opened up a huge door for us. It was a fantastic service. As I moved into offering things for sale, it was great as well since they handled it all. But...
Quality started to slide. You could get the same file printed twice in the same order, and have two wildly different parts. Combine this with the prices going up what seemed like every week, along with the sidden (and rapid) rise of high quality, cheap, at home printers, and the writing was on the wall.
It will defiantly leave a hole in the hobby - I really feel for some of the guys in other modeling areas.
I made a decent amount of money through shapeways over the last few years, but my sales when to virtually nothing in the last 18 months.

This is very sad news. It seems they hit a peak about 5 yrs ago but then the price increases and added fees made everything too expensive. Their customer service was top notch, feel bad for all the good people that lost their jobs.

I wonder if this will result in vendors who would normally sell through Shapeways branching out on their own. A shame, as a lot of their HO scale vehicles, while not perfect, are not offered anywhere else.

A shame, as a lot of their HO scale vehicles, while not perfect, are not offered anywhere else. Some will, some won't. Some will end up on 3D Central, some won't. Just like lost wax casting detail parts from a bygone era, some parts will continue to be available, some won't.

In a way this is good news for the would-be entrepreneur. If you can handle the volume, commitment, and deliver consistent quality, this would be a great side or full-time hustle!

Great way to ruin a hobby, make a business out of it. I'm here with just doing decoder installs for local people. Less time to do my own stuff. On topic: I'm actually curious what will become of some of the stuff I wanted to get but never got around to getting

On topic: I'm actually curious what will become of some of the stuff I wanted to get but never got around to getting I found the guy who was behind these: www.shapeways.com/product/SZSBV2PEY/mdc-end-platforms-1-1970s-acf-styleHe's active on the MRH forums, so I messaged him there. He's looking at other options. I recommended 3D Central to him. I wonder what fr8kar is planning to do?

I wonder what fr8kar is planning to do? As soon as I heard the news I deleted each file from my account at Shapeways. Then I deleted my store. I'm not sure if that did anything to benefit me or not, but I did not want to leave the files in the hands of the persons or entity that ends up with the library Shapeways hosted. Each designer had an agreement with Shapeways that their intellectual property would be protected. Through the nine or so years I did business with Shapeways they honored that agreement. I have no idea how their successors will treat those agreements. As far as the files I created being 3D printed in the future, that's something I'm sure I'll get to one day. But it's not a priority for me now.

Ryan H, thanks for your post.
If I had ever h ad a daughter, I would definitely not have named her Prudence, but that is still a very useful virtue and habit.
