Does Walthers Proto still "weld" detail parts to the shell with a soldering iron as Life Like used to do? I just scored a couple of non-sound GP7's that I plan to strip and repaint and am wondering if removing handrails, etc., will be a crapshoot like with the older models. I never seemed to be able to remove a set of railings without breaking at least one mounting pin.

No. Most of the details are also now metal (grabs to be exact).
The way I used to successfully remove those parts was to go over the "weld" with a chisel blade, and get rid of the melted blob. Almost always they would come right apart.
