Tangent Scale Models is happy to announce the next release of our Greenville 86’ High Cube Double Plug Door Box Car! This is not just a single box car, but instead a system of 86’ High Cube Double Plug Door Box Car models. Today, we are releasing seven all-new exciting paint schemes including an all-new body and undecorated kit. This is not a pre-order announcement -- the cars are available right now!
During the 1960s, the most radical freight car designs employed the extreme height clearances offered by Plate F car designs. In 1964, no car type articulated this extreme more than the 86-foot, purpose-built “Auto Parts” boxcars. These large boxcars became fixtures on the rails all over North American mainlines, riding hot trains to deliver components vital to the productivity of auto plants. While several car builders offered 86’ auto parts boxcars, the most prolific builder of the double plug door design was Greenville Steel Car Company of Greenville, PA. More than 4,400 of these cars were acquired by most major railroads, and they were assigned to pools where multiple railroad’s cars served a specific shipper or shippers. Original utilization of these cars was for Ford, Pontiac, and Chrysler, as well as deliveries from 3rd party parts suppliers to the auto plants. Greenville’s 1964-1978 production was the longest run for this car type, with many still in service today.
Our August 2024 release includes several roadnames with a new body for this Tangent Greenville System: the September and October 1969 built Greenville cars. These cars feature grab iron and sill details that bridge the gap between previous Tangent 1968 End-Of-Car Cushioning and late-1969/1970 End-Of-Car Cushioning offerings. For those keeping track at home, this is our thirteenth body in our Greenville 86’ System of Auto Part Box Car Replicas.
The Tangent Scale Models Greenville 86' Double Plug Door Box Car continues the design and operational standards set by previous models in the Tangent product line. This includes multiple specific body variations, four different brake layouts (two brake systems), four different draft gear combinations, and three underframe styles which incorporate Center-of-Car Cushioning and End-Of-Car Cushioning options. The Tangent Greenville 86’ box car includes a 70-ton or 100-ton truck option, with selections appropriate for each paint scheme, and both include “spinning” roller bearing caps. Finally, our cars are weighted properly and come with Kadee® couplers mounted in specially-designed coupler pockets which means they operate as good as they look. Due to the car’s size, we recommend curves of 24” or larger for these models.
Are you modeling auto parts traffic from 1965 forward? Welcome. You don’t have any Greenville cars that look like these!
Our August 2024 release includes these seven all-new paint schemes - available for purchase today!
- Denver & Rio Grande Western (DRGW) "Delivery 1969 Orange" offers the bold Rio Grande graphics as-delivered from Greenville Steel Car Company. D&RGW received 30 cars in November of 1969 and they were painted bright orange with the huge “the Action Road” lettering. The model features accurate Keystone Center-of-Car Cushioning (COCC) and full truck-mounted brake piping and details, just like the prototype. The ends of the COCC draft gear extend beyond the ends of the car and feature carefully-painted yellow coupler centering device handle detail. Take a look at those gorgeous 100-Ton “Low Profile” Barber S-2-A trucks that show off the accurate rotating Hyatt roller bearing caps. Yes, the industry’s best trucks include road-specific rotating cap truck details! This D&RGW scheme features an accurate return route to P.C.R.R. in Utica, Michigan. Available in six numbers, don’t miss these requested models! SKU 25057
- Milwaukee Road (MILW) "Delivery 1977 Yellow" replicates Milwaukee Road’s order of 20 cars built in September of 1977. Proudly advertising “America’s Resourceful Railroad,” this federal yellow scheme is a classic. The models feature End-Of-Car Cushioning and a body-mounted brake system correct for these later orders from Greenville. There is a lot to see on the underframe, with all that brake linkage hanging down low and carefully duplicated on the model. These cars also feature the auxiliary crank arms at the top center of each door – these prototypes were delivered with this detail. The model has an accurate brake stand and modern brake wheel, along with see-through Gypsum crossover platforms. Every single piece of Milwaukee lettering is carefully reproduced on this model. Don’t forget to check out our prototype photos on our website. We back up our Industry-leading artwork with real prototype photos! Available in six numbers. SKU 25058
- Chicago & North Western (CNW) "Delivery 1969 Brown" is our first example from this release using another newly-tooled body. The C&NW’s Greenville order for 10 cars was delivered in October of 1969. Notice the combination of End-Of-Car Cushioning (EOCC), drop-style grab irons on the corners of the sides and the raised jacking tabs on the sill near the steps. Modelers always ask: Why didn’t you run C&NW yet? Here is the answer. We wanted to execute the model with the correct body! These beautiful C&NW models feature 100-Ton “Low Profile” Barber S-2-A trucks with accurate rotating Hyatt roller bearing caps. If you look closely, you will notice the “WSP” and “Return to DT&I Fordhaven, Mich” on the car side. All these model details match the C&NW prototype cars. It’s time to add to your Ford Woodhaven Stamping Plant pool with these sharp C&NW examples, available in four numbers. SKU 25059
- Rock Island (RI) "Delivery 1969 Red" replicates the RI’s order for 10 cars built in October of 1969 by Greenville Steel Car Company. This RI model example uses Tangent’s latest Greenville Body: A late-1969 combination of End-Of-Car Cushioning (EOCC), drop-style grab irons on the corners of the sides and the raised jacking tabs on the sill near the steps. RI modelers, this is why we asked you to be patient. We wanted to execute this paint scheme accurately! The B-End of the car is equipped with a Peacock/Elcon-National 1600 brake stand and modern brake wheel. The EOCC underframe has truck-mounted brake gear details and the 100-Ton “Low Profile” Barber S-2-A trucks have accurate rotating “Brenco-6” roller bearing caps. All of these model features match the prototype cars. Tangent’s Industry-Leading graphics shine here with carefully replicated RI lettering, from the big “ROCK ISLAND” on the right to the oval slogan “cushion car- A SOFT TOUCH for freight” on the left. This scheme is HOT and available in four numbers. The return route lettering, CAPY, dates and other fine data is car-number and photo specific! SKU -01 has a return route to B&OCT Chicago Heights, IL, SKU -02 has a return route to PC Railroad Bedford, OH, SKU -03 has a return route to B&OCT Chicago Heights, IL and SKU -04 has a return route to DT&I Fordhaven, MI and related WSP lettering for the Woodhaven Stamping Plant. SKU 25060
- Mississippi Delta (MSDR) "Ex-RI Patch 1991+" gives 1990s+ modelers a great example of a patched RI car. MSDR assumed the lease of two Ex-RI cars in 1991. They were patched and continued in auto parts service in MSDR’s pool of second-hand cars. The model features all the accurate RI details, including a late-1969 body build, End-Of-Car Cushioning underframe, truck-mounted brake gear details and 100-Ton “Low Profile” Barber S-2-A trucks with accurate rotating “Brenco-6” roller bearing caps. Tangent has carefully duplicated the patches and stencils, even down to chalk marks found on one side of the prototype as MSDR patched and renumbered the car in 1991. We hope you didn’t miss our previous MSDR offering in Ex-Ann Arbor orange. Now is your chance to add another distinctive patch-out to your railroad. This car will be popular and is available in one number! 25061-01
- Norfolk Southern (NS) "The Thoroughbred B122 1995” is another highly-requested paint scheme in the Tangent Greenville 86’ family of models. These prototypes were pulled from NW’s large B122 class of cars. Metro East Industries Inc. in East St. Louis IL refurbished the cars in 1995 and applied one of the most distinctive 86’ schemes available to modelers: A beautiful gray car with NS “The Thoroughbred” graphics. These unique cars continued in Ford auto parts service after the refurbishing. The models feature a brand-new Tangent body shell, matching the prototypes built in September of 1969 for the NW. The modern details are carefully executed on this model: Notice the relocated tack boards to the far right and the auxiliary crank “third arms” applied to the top of each door. This paint scheme makes you say “WOW.” That huge NS logo stands out, with distinctive “NORFOLK SOUTHERN” in a typestyle that is unique to this scheme. And of course, the NS “Thoroughbred” graphics are just plain cool. This scheme is for the modern guys 1995 to at least 2014 – and possibly later! Available in four accurate numbers. SKU 25062
- Illinois Central (IC) "Gray Repaint 1995" offers up a great example of IC cars in the modern era. The prototypes in this group were part of a 30-car order built in September of 1977 for the Illinois Central Gulf. After the rebirth of the IC (no “G”) in 1987, the IC Centralia Shops slowly repainted freight cars in an attractive gray scheme with Roman graphics. By 1995, some of the 86’ Greenville cars were selected for repainting. The models feature End-Of-Car Cushioning and a body-mounted brake system correct for this 1977 order from Greenville. Underneath, you can spot all that brake linkage hanging down low and carefully duplicated on the model. These cars also feature the auxiliary crank arms at the top center of each door – these prototypes were delivered with this detail. The model has an accurate brake stand and modern brake wheel, along with see-through Morton-style crossover platforms. These replicas ride on 100-Ton “Low Profile” Barber S-2-A trucks and have accurate rotating “Timken” roller bearing caps. While IC lettering looks plain at first glance, careful attention is needed to execute this properly in HO for a specific 1995-era repaint. We use real prototype photos, so you can look carefully and read the “Service With Safety – Set Your Mind” safety reminders. Don’t forget to check out our prototype photos on our website. Available in two accurate numbers. SKU 25069
- Undecorated KIT "Version N - 1969 EOCC" gives the kit builders a much-needed option. Sometimes you just want to build your own model or paint a scheme we have yet to offer. This unpainted kit handles the Greenville cars delivered in September and October of 1969 with End-Of-Car Cushioning. The kit includes the correct EOCC body, appropriate truck-mounted brake details, accurate End-Of-Car Cushion underframe, appropriate details parts and 100-Ton “Low profile” Barber S-2-A trucks, 36” wheels and rotating “Timken” caps. You supply your own favorite couplers. (Accurate for CNW, DTI, GTW, NW, RI, SLSF) SKU 25011-01
