Installing DH165K0 decoder in Kato GP35

All, I am installing Digitrax decoders in the various and sundry Kato GP35's I have.  In the later versions I am installing DH126P and DH127P 9-pin decoders and have no issues.  My question is - have any of you had issues installing the DH165K0 decoder in the early versions.  Specifically, have you had problems AFTER re-installing the shell after installation with either binding or not running smoothly?  They run fine after I install them and test them but then have issues after I place the shell back on the body.  It's not everyone and I have compared the ones that are fine with ones that have issues and can see no differences.  I re-adjust the decoders on the motors to make sure they sit true on the motor and no wires nor motor leads are out of place.  Before I start reaming out the inside of the shell with all the attendant "dangers" (for me!) of that, do any of you have any secrets or tips on this particular installation?
