I have one of these models sitting on the shelf and the repair kit that Athearn put together. I have not worked on it, but was going to soon. Has anyone completed this and has it worked successfully? My understanding so far is that the repair is needed for the left front and right rear truck gear body. Issue being the slot (outer) is too large. The fix is to add a shim (thickness to the side frame peg insert. I believe it is only the outer peg that needs the shim - there are only two shims in the kit.
The instructions set is several pages and about a dozen photos - probably could have been consolidated down to one composite drawing image with a couple of arrows. Did this only effect the Union Pacific run or all 3 window cab versions that were in that production run?
