I see the Intermountain FMC double door 5283's come with one of two types of doors. Are they molded into the shell or separate parts?

I just pulled out one of mine and it looks like they are a separate part which makes sense if they do the Youngstown doors and also Superior I also noticed the factory installed Kadee's are very high.

Rick, Did you find yours to have high Kadee couplers out of the box and what was the solution? Overset Kadees?

I should check mine, I recall they DIDN'T have a cushoined draft gear on the car. Wonder if moloco parts would fix

On the kit version of this car, one uses a Kadee #178 Pocket and #158 Whisker Couplers, that gives you the extended Cushion that it should have, have never bought a RTR 5283 so I don't know what they have. The nice thing about these doors, is they fit the old Robbins Rails 60' boxcar so you can replace the double plugs with sliders, I have done that with a number of cars where the new Tangent cars don't work. Rick, Did you find yours to have high Kadee couplers out of the box and what was the solution? Overset Kadees? I've only done a few, and with those I used Moloco draft gear and new trucks. I don't recall the height issue being a concern after this. Of note Intermountain has announced that they are offering a new draft gear assembly for these cars that will accurately capture the correct Hydra-cushion draft gear appearance on their upcoming release. They have indicated they also hope to offer this part separately for those who want to update their older cars. -Rick

You can ask IM for parts and they'll sell you some if they have them. I asked for Center Flow end cages and they sent me a set for the cylindrical hopper. :-( Asked again for ACF end cages and they didn't have any. Availability is spotty. Sometimes they'll remove parts from damaged models if they have them. If anybody has an extra set (four) of the faded blue-gray SP ex-Golden West Superior doors to part with, I'd be interested. Bought an SSW car only to find it has the wrong doors. I'm stripping the lettering to make it a BAR 9500 series car, which I think were Procor leasers (MILW?). I have one of the factory painted BAR green cars (a bit too new for my era, and I see the next run will include the bright red BAR scheme.
* I see that IM will be doing the blue Procor leasers lettered fhor MILW and MDW. Maybe I should just wait and get one of those to patch for BAR, although the paint won't be faded.

Ed That plan to make the part available came straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak, so take it for what it's worth. -Rick

...and they never stopped offering *selected* parts i.e. PTC arrays in blister packs, it's the sale of random loose parts that ended. I'd expect IM to go that route with the 5283 draft gear, it addresses a shortcoming on these cars from day one. Doug Stark I guess they forgot that they're not offering parts anymore.
