Live from Milwaukee, Wisconsin at Trainfest: It is time for a newly-tooled N Scale Covered Hopper! That’s right! Tangent Scale Models announces the availability today of a brand-new N Scale model – the Trinity Industries “Pullman-Design” 4750 Covered Hopper, another all-new release for November’s Trainfest 2024!
Remember, N Scale Modelers: this is NOT a preorder announcement. When Tangent announces a new release, it is ready to ship today! These cars are IN STOCK NOW.
Following nine years of continuous production, the Pullman-Standard 4750cf covered hopper was the largest mass-produced covered hopper design in North American railcar history. After Pullman-Standard’s demise in 1981, Trinity Industries acquired the design and production rights for the “Pullman-version” of the 4750 design (which killed Trinity’s own 4750 from the catalog). Shippers wanted the “Pullman-design” 4750 to be offered again! Produced between 1988 and 1995, Trinity produced the “Pullman-design” 4750 and met customer needs for this popular covered hopper. During that production period, Trinity made a series of refinements to the design. Many Class I railroads purchased the Trinity 4750, with BN, UP, and CSX ordering them in the thousands. Trinity 4750 cars continue to serve Class I, short line, and in lessee services today, hauling grains, fertilizer, salt, and other bulk commodities.
Our November production includes nine total private and railroad schemes. Let’s dig in:
- CSXT "Delivery 1988"[/a] is available in the now-classic CSXT beige covered hopper scheme. CSX was the first railroad to adopt Trinity’s Pullman-design 4750. CSXT specified that their 4750s have hazardous material placard holders on both sides and both ends of the car, which Tangent has included with their unpainted aluminum finish. Up on the roof of the cars are unpainted galvanized “slope up” Morton-design running boards, and the painted-beige trough hatches that Trinity built are replicated on our model. On the ends of the cars, Trinity designed a horizontal weld line in the end sheet, and we have duplicated that on the models, along with accurate air reservoir placement and design. These CSX cars are fitted with separate straight-handle coupler lift bars, separate brake wheel, etch metal Morton crossover platforms, and don’t forget the flexible rubber trainline air hoses! Underneath the cars, the centersill dividers have access holes in them like they should. The bays have accurate Miner Self-Lok gates installed. The stenciling on the cars includes the CSX lettering with the lines below each character, and the “A CSX Quality Car” lettering in a small rectangular box. This CSX artwork is carefully replicated for these Trinity cars, from the large, slightly “condensed” CSX logo lettering down to the carefully reproduced 1988-era Trinity builder logo. We are proud to offer these CSX replicas in 24 road numbers: the first 12 road numbers carry October 1988 build dates, whereas the second 12 road numbers carry November 1988 build dates. SKU 81010
- Burlington Northern (BN) "Delivery Cascade Green 9-1994" continues our tradition of offering gorgeous BN models, and this is perhaps the most desired of them all! These cars are from the fifth 1,000 car group of the 6,000 BN-ordered Trinity 4750s. These cars came from Trinity in the “3 line” BN scheme with the smaller BN logo, all justified to the left side of the car. While most of the stenciling is sharp white paint against the Cascade Green carbody color, there are yellow caution lettering stenciling blocks on the sides and ends. These cars feature the “bolt on” outlet gate design that was found on some of the Trinity 4750 prototypes. Up on the roof of the cars are unpainted galvanized “slope up” Morton-design running boards and the galvanized steel trough hatches that Trinity applied are replicated on our model. Every railroad had different hatches, and BN is no exception, with multiple hatch types across orders – and within each order! The ends of the cars include a new-design brake reservoir, straight-handle coupler lift bars, separate brake wheel, etch metal Morton crossover platforms, and flexible rubber trainline air hoses! Underneath the cars, the centersill dividers have access holes in them like they should. These cars carrying this BN paint scheme were the capstone freight car of the Burlington Northern era. They were the largest fleet of cars ever to wear Cascade Green Burlington Northern paint, and they exemplified the early 1990s BN era. These cars were seemingly everywhere, and some of the fleet remains in service today in their original BN green paint, operating within the large BNSF covered hopper fleet. Oh, and just one more thing: BN was the largest purchaser of Trinity 4750s. These stunners are now available in 24 road numbers. SKU 81011
- Union Pacific (UP) "Delivery 10-1993" is an exciting offering for us, because Union Pacific was a large user of the Trinity 4750 as well. Union Pacific ordered these cars in a more neutral gray than previous covered hopper purchases – not the typical, darker, “Harbor Mist” gray. The cars have the distinctive UP shield in the center of the car that screams 1990s UP painting practices. These Trinity 4750s include the “bolt on” outlet gate design that was found on some of the Trinity 4750 prototypes. Up on the roof of the cars you will find unpainted galvanized “slope up” Morton-design running boards and the galvanized steel trough hatches that Trinity applied are replicated on our model. Every railroad had different hatches, and UP is no exception. The ends of the cars include straight-handle coupler lift bars, separate brake wheel, etch metal Morton crossover platforms, and flexible rubber trainline air hoses! Underneath the cars, the centersill dividers have access holes in them like they should. These cars carrying this UP paint scheme were from a grouping of 1,800 cars purchased from Trinity Industries. These stunners are now available in 24 road numbers. SKU 81012
- DGHX "Delivery Gray 4-1993" is one of two private lease offerings in this release of Trinity 4750s, which were leased to North American Chemical. This car is a stunner with its off-white paint color and distinctive red logo. The DGHX Trinity 4750s include the Gravac gravity-pneumatic combo outlet gates, a very distinctive prototype design we have tooled in N Scale. Up on the roof of the cars you will find an unpainted galvanized “slope up” Morton-design running boards and the fiberglass painted trough hatches that Trinity applied are replicated on our model. The ends of the cars include straight-handle coupler lift bars, separate brake wheel, etch metal Morton crossover platforms, and flexible rubber trainline air hoses! Underneath the cars, the centersill dividers have access holes in them like they should, in between those gorgeous Gravac outlet gates. DGHX had a total of 700 Trinity 4750s, all built in 1993. These stunners are now available in 6 road numbers, and photos show them on both coasts, in Florida, and all places in between. SKU 81013
- GACX "GATX Gray 2-1995" is one of two private lease offerings in this release of Trinity 4750s. This car is a stunner with its gray paint color and large, bold GATX stencils in the upper right corner of the carbody side. The GATX’s Trinity 4750s include the “bolt on” outlet gate design, along with gravity gates. Up on the roof of the cars you will find an unpainted galvanized “slope up” Morton-design running boards and the galvanized steel trough hatches that Trinity applied are replicated on our model. The ends of the cars include straight-handle coupler lift bars, separate brake wheel, etch metal Morton crossover platforms, and flexible rubber trainline air hoses! GATX initially leased a total of 200 Trinity 4750s, all built in 1995, although they picked up more Trinity cars in later years, which we offer as models as well. These stunners are now available in 6 road numbers, and photos show them all over North America, including in Canada and Mexico. SKU 81014
- BNSF "Large Swoosh 2005" complements our BN car offering in this run of Trinity 4750s, for those that model BNSF in the conspicuity era. This car is a stunner with its BNSF oxide red paint color, the large and bold BNSF swoosh logo on the right side of the carbody, and the conspicuity stripe markings alongside the model. This paint scheme includes some neat “little details” like the white paint details on the ends and steps. These cars are former BN Trinity 4750s built in 1994. These cars are equipped with the “bolt on” outlet gate design that was found on some of the Trinity 4750 prototypes. Up on the roof of the cars is a carbody red painted galvanized “slope up” Morton-design running board, and the fiberglass trough hatches that BNSF applied are replicated on our model. The ends of the cars include straight-handle coupler lift bars, separate brake wheel, etch metal Morton crossover platforms, and flexible rubber trainline air hoses. These stunners are now available in 12 road numbers. Don’t miss out, these will go quickly! SKU 81015
- GACX "BNSF Patch 2010" is one of two BN/BNSF patch-out offerings in this run of Trinity 4750s and are in general lease service. These cars are former BNSF swoosh cars that were patched out. These models are interesting because they mimic GATX’s patching of the BNSF reporting marks and logos, however they retain most of the other data. We offer a muted carbody color and a fresh paint patch out. We also mimic GATX’s treatment of the grab irons, where they painted the grab irons on the sides and ends of the car white in a nod to rail employee safety. These cars are formerly BN cars built in 1994. These cars have the “bolt on” outlet gate design that was found on some of the Trinity 4750 prototypes. Up on the roof of the cars is a carbody red painted galvanized “slope up” Morton-design running board, and the fiberglass trough hatches that BNSF applied are replicated on our model. The ends of the cars include straight-handle coupler lift bars, separate brake wheel, etch metal Morton crossover platforms, and flexible rubber trainline air hoses, all of which are accurately modeled on our Tangent replicas. These stunners are now available in 6 road numbers. Don’t miss out on these or on our GACX “BN Patch 2010 cars - they go together! SKU 81016
- GACX "BN Patch 2010” is one of two BN/BNSF patch-out offerings in this run of Trinity 4750s and are in general lease service. These cars are former BN Cascade Green cars that were patched out. These models are interesting because they mimic GATX’s patching of the BN reporting marks and logos, however they retain most of the other data. We offer a muted carbody green color and fresh gray patch outs, just like the real cars had. These former BN cars were built in 1994. These cars have the “bolt on” outlet gate design that was found on some of the Trinity 4750 prototypes. Up on the roof of the cars is an unpainted galvanized “slope up” Morton-design running board, and the fiberglass trough hatches that were applied during the BNSF era. The ends of the cars include straight-handle coupler lift bars, separate brake wheel, etch metal Morton crossover platforms, and flexible rubber trainline air hoses, all of which are accurately modeled on our Tangent replicas. These stunners are now available in 6 road numbers, and all 6 cars have slight variations in their patch outs – see the photos on our website to see these gorgeous cars. Don’t miss out on these or on our GACX “BNSF Patch 2010" cars - they go together! SKU 81017
- INTX "UP Patch 2013" are formerly UP system cars that were leased to INTX, which stands for Interstate Commodities Inc., a railcar leasing firm that has bought up many covered hoppers including these Trinity 4750s. The cars retain their UP paint jobs, but to match prototype weathering patterns we have faded the body color to represent the chalking paint of the prototypes, and we have included a faded Union Pacific shield in the center of the car (well, three out of the 4 car numbers have them – one has a patched out shield per prototype practice). We also have added the conspicuity stripe patterns that are found on the real cars. Yes, we matched 4 specific car numbers with 4 different sets of artwork patches, conspicuity stripes and data. These Trinity 4750s include the “bolt on” outlet gate design that was found on some of the Trinity 4750 prototypes, along with gravity discharge gates. Up on the roof of the cars you will find unpainted galvanized “slope up” Morton-design running boards and the galvanized steel trough hatches that Trinity applied are replicated on our model. Every railroad had different hatches, and UP is no exception. The ends of the cars include straight-handle coupler lift bars, separate brake wheel, etch metal Morton crossover platforms, and flexible rubber trainline air hoses, all of which are accurately modeled on our Tangent replicas. These stunners are now available in 4 road numbers, and all 4 cars have slight variations in their patch outs. SKU 81018
