There's no helping the SD9043MACs, but if they would just maintain the Dash 9s, they wouldn't be so worn out. BNSF Dash 9s have held up very well, and even NS Dash 9s aren't bad mechanically. But UP locomotives, unless they're brand new, just feel like they're on the brink of death.

What will become of CNW 8646 and 8701 since they are the last 2 unpatched CNW Dash 9s still on UP's roster? Several years ago UP let the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, IL tidy up 8646 and 8701 to make their paint look a little less worn. Maybe if UP's generous enough they'll donate either 8646 or 8701 to IRM to go along with that CNW SD40-2 that was donated by UP several years ago and the other CNW locos they have in their collection. www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=331753&nseq=35

This is a post below from TO. Thanks fo ble692 and TO. I am not sure what the deal is on the SD90/43 Macs, but we gave several of those units around Roseville CA being used daily. The units were used in heavy coal train service for most of their active service life and probably do need some repairs. There is a few Dash 8 and Dash 9 units in Roseville that have been stored for many months.

UP Motive Power Changes Author: ble692 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There have been some posts on here recently regarding the UP's SD9043MAC fleet and their frame crack issues, and possible retirements of the C44-9W fleet. While the SD9043AC's are being dealt with, none are being retired and in fact the UP is working on a repair plan for them. Those without frame cracks have remained in service, while those with cracks are stored pending repairs. Most of the C44-9W's on the roster are still working. The majority can been found in Texas, although they do move around the system. There have been several other notable motive power changes recently that have gone mostly unnoticed. The fleet of ex-SP B39-8's and B40-8's have been retired in mass, leaving just one single unit left working out there on (UP 1819, ex-SP 8019). It is just working until something goes wrong with it, even if it is something very minor, and then it will be gone as well. Time also appears to be running out on the fleet of C40-8's. Once numbering 256 units (UP 9100-9355), six have been lost to wrecks over the years, and most of the remaining 250 units have seen little to no use since 2008. They have just been sitting in deadlines across the system. Last week a large group of retirements occurred, with 50 units leaving the roster. The 200 units still on the roster are all stored and one has to wonder if any will ever see service on the UP again. None of the C40-8W/C41-8W fleet were retired at this point, although only 14 are in service at this time. Wonder what their fate will be?

There seems to be more determination on the railroad's behalf to minimize or eliminate the balance of odds n ends type of power and standardize on one or two locomotives. I read a presentation from NS describing the benefits to a homogenous mainline locomotive fleet. Ironically after this statement they describe their rebuilding campaign for SD40-2s SD50(into PR43s), and SD60s with new cabs. I guess for "switching" anything goes still lol

Well many trains I seen through Wisconsin would have trio's of UP SD90/43 Mac not because they needed 13000HP, they were just so unreliable. I think the deadline in Butler has a few in it.
