Last year on the old Atlas Forum, I posted a summary of information from the 2011 Kader Industries’ annual report. Kader is a company that is listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange. They own Bachmann, among other manufacturers. They have three lines of business, manufacture of model railroad products, manufacture of toys and leasing of real estate. A link to their 2012 annual report can be found at www.kader.com.hk/investor_relations/pdf/result2012e.pdfThey provided limited information by segment, but state that their sales of model railroad products was about $90.1 million in US dollars. This represented a decline of 19.48% from the 2011 sales. They also stated that they restructured their manufacturing by consolidating everything in Mainland China. Their largest customer represented 38% of 2012 sales and their five largest customers represented 55% of total sales. They indicated that combined sales of toys and model trains amounted to $158.6 in US dollars. These sales generated a loss of $11.8 million in US dollars before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. I don’t know how representative these results are of other model railroad companies, but it certainly looks like 2012 was a tough year for Kader.

Perhaps part of the problem was Bachmann's new releases. Just rehashed Athearn locomotives and freight car, including the wrong x-panel roof. FAIL If the Bachmann ACF Plate B would've had the right diag panel roof, it might've been something with some product identity. But it wasn't. ChrisPy

Our former forum host, Atlas, sure hasn't been pumping out product over the last few years. Manufacturing headaches aside, Atlas approach to even re-hashes of existing models has been guarded at best. Ditto for Walthers and the Proto line.
Bowser, announces the C430 and the pushes back of the C636. The supposed reason for the C636 delay was it was Bowser's decision and had nothing to do with factory or tooling problems.
Even Athearn, doesn't seem to be announcing as much as they had a few years ago. BLI is a roller coaster when it comes to actually getting models out the door.
Tough times in the toy train market?

I believe the simple answer to production being slow is what Intermountain told some of us at the Proto Show in Cocoa Beach Florida this year...The company that was producing models for almost everyone but Bachmann was bought out by Kader a few years a go, a manager of that company left and had started his own factory to do work for everyone else but they will not be able to keep up with the $200M demand. At best they can put out $50M in product a year. Simply stated production is 25% of what it used to be.

If that were the case, i would think the modest price increase that stir so much controversy online would be of far greater proportions.

Spikre In general, I would have to believe most of us are not buying as much as we probably did ten years ago. I was intrigue by the On30 items from PSC and purchased a few of the D&RGW K series models. At that time, I also purchased a complete wheel set for one of the K36 models to convert it to On3 if I decided to use the set. At least that one could be used as a regular On3 model. Larry
