Is there a way to enable blocking of entire threads like there is individual users? On other forums I belong to, there is a way to go to "thread tools", then click "ignore thread". I can't find that, unless it is in a very obscure location.

You'll have to check with Donnell, although if you click on a forum member name, one option is to "block".

The interesting thing is, there is a thread that is shown, and the only three users I have on my ignore list are the only posters. A solid thread of blocked posts...

Terry, Yes, the thread shows, as does the initial poster in the forum latest posts page based on the one user I have blocked. You can ignore the rest, but AFAIK, you still have put up with the sight of the posted article.
Ignore Thread would be nice to have to keep me from wasting time on silly stuff, not just keeping the ignores out of sight. I suspect that depends on the host software's support for implementation in any case.

Hey Terry, cant You just manually Ignore a thread ?? just wondering Spikre I could, but where would the fun be in that? Spikre, You can at least take heart in the fact that you haven't made Terry's "short list" yet. I am enjoying every bit of mine, which is even shorter than Terry's list.

"ignore thread" would be a good tool to have, because I could block a thread when I first see it, no matter who posted in it. It eliminates the temptation to post there, and saves everyone involved a lot of grief. For example, and of the "hobby is dying" threads would be removed from my view, and I could just go happily on my way, never even seeing the firestorm.

...the "hobby is dying" threads would be removed from my view, and I could just go happily on my way, never even seeing the firestorm. Firestorm? Don't give that too much credit. It's more like a kerosene lamp with a smoky wick than a firestorm. In fact, for all the originality and thoughtful discourse it inspires, it may just be the smoky wick...

I seem to remember the phrase "tempest in a teakettle," and it seems to fit most of those threads.

Yep, it'll help your blood pressure and increase your enjoyment of discussion with thoughtful people. Gets me to thinking...always dangerous...but I thought of something that might make an interesting feature of the board (which of course is wholly dependent on ProBoards, so I'm not advocating anyone write special code for it, just a concept.) Maybe the board software could track number of ignores. The admins could choose to set it at whatever level they feel is appropriate, but the number of ignores could be set so that once the limit is "achieved" that user goes on moderated status -- or is simply flagged as a problem poster for further scrutiny. Imagine the reaction of one of these frequent flyers when they login to find a message that says something like: Due to an excessive number of Ignore requests for this account, it has been placed on moderated status until you have either discussed the situation with board admins@Proboard.com or for the next 30 days.Might get 'em to chill with the raging keyboard commando style they favor...? Nah, probably not. They'd just go next from there to the 6 month ban for second offense... Just speaking from experience here as an admin or owner of a number of other sites/lists. For most of the people engaged in such behavior membership and participation is much more about them expressing some dubious sense of "rights" to offend and goad other users than is is the actual subject at hand, say model railroading or geolocating or whatever. Like spam, they make up an unfortunately high percentage of traffic on the internet, but are even more difficult to filter. That's why it's great we at least have this individual "thermostat" we can set to our own comfort level with ungracious co-users.

What a good idea, Mr. Lehman. Having moderated and managed some message boards over the years, 98% of the issues are generated by 1% of the members. Either they are desperate for any sort of attention, or are completely lacking social skills.

On a couple of forums I belong to, there is a "Top Poster" in the banner page. Maybe we could have a "Most Ignored"...

proboards has that banner feature but not the most ignored part, but you could put notices if you wanted, this I know because I have started 3 forums before, one was discreetly for my friends in HS and was never blocked by the servers. I even had a most hated teacher thread... that was popular... long ago deleted though, not in HS anymore... and man break ups turned into major flame wars...
