I really need those RTR Rail Gons..I hope we see them before 2013 but who knows? Are those based on the MDC Railgon, which is supposed to be fairly accurate for that gon. At least you should be able to hunt for those at swap meets and train shows and Ebay. They are easy to build kits if you find the MDC kit version.

Jim,Indeed they are MDC mill gons..I prefer the newer RTR over the old kits for several reasons one important reason is they come with metal wheels along with sharper lettering. Peddler=Brakie on other forums. Oh, hi Larry, I can imagine if Athearn offers Railgons in RTR in future release, they are going to sell for $30 or something crazy. The MDC kit was about $8, but yeah, you need to add metal wheels and KD's so maybe $11 when you're done. I am almost afraid to see how much any new RTR items will MSRP at from Athearn and don't forget Athearn is reducing the dealer discount too. Bummer much.

Jim,The information I found is these gons will be $28.98-subject to change.I wasn't fully aware of the price till you mention the $30.00 price tag. Thanks Jim!
Street price should be around $19-22.00.A tad more then I might be willing to fork over since there are other ways.
As you said I can look for the kits-which I might do or buy Atlas/ Trainman gons lettered for IHB and NS which will work just as well.

If Horizon/Athearn cut eight percentage points off the dealer discount, making it 32%, that means the $30 gondola would have a dealer cost of $20.40.
I can't see a street price of $22... and $19 would be selling at a loss.
My guess is a 10% discount off MSRP might be all we see... and more model railroaders head for the exits...

It's sad the only thing keeping the model railroad companies alive is the thing that's killing off the hobby. I think I'll continue with my program of acquiring all the spare parts I can, while there is still a model railroad industry to supply those parts.

I'll have to go back and find the article, it has been years since I read it so I'll just leave it as that for now.

Quote from Jim Eager on the MFCL Yahoo Group.
"Other than the model is a foot or two short (reportedly to fit MDC's existing box), it is closest to the Thrall-built TSG 10 class Railgons, which came in 1980-81, so the GONX is good for the last three years of your era."

Rick J Rick,I was aware of the gon being two feet to short I remember reading that in MR years ago. The missing two feet doesn't bother me as much as some but,I can no longer even see two feet in HO unless its the feet on a wee person. ;D At the going price maybe Athearn should retool and add the missing two feet?

George,I just toss out some figures as examples.I already read about the dealer cut so,that's one more step in direct sales only as manufacturers find ways to fill thier coffers. I seen Athearn RTR cars on blow out for $8.99 but,I believe those was orphan road names or car styles nobody wanted.

Like Larry, "a foot or two short" isn't a deal breaker for me, especially if there are no other gondola's the you can use that are more appropriate for the Railgon.
In the case of D&RGW GS drop bottom gon's, the same situation exists, the only available affordable models are plastic and they are too short compared to the prototype. I have three choices:
1) buy the brass model from West Side - can't afford that! Especially if you need a bunch. 2) Kit bash the plastic model to add the extra length - impractical for 99% of us. 3) Accept the Red Caboose or IMR plastic GS gons which look good, but are too short.
No brainer.
Now if a model was going to cost $40, I'd be a little pickier, but I have the MDC kit Railgon and can live with the discrepancy. I won't pay $20+ each however. I'll hunt them down at shows for closer to $10 each.
