For those of you who have neglected to purchase your compulsory Dockside over the years, here's another chance. According to Brasstrains.com.
My old Rivarossi caught zinc rot, so I'm ever so slightly tempted. I think it will be a wee bit more costly. And, considering the source, more than a wee bit more "wonderful". Hmmm. No mention of sound or DCC, though. I think we all know the answer there.

So,Varney's L'il Joe lives on..
Ok,ok,not Varneys but, still IIRC his was the first 0-4-0T.
The Docksider has been manufactured many times over the years by several manufacturers.IMHO AHM's was the better looker.

Yeah, I was quite fond of my Rivarossi--it had full valve gear. That swell three pole motor caused it to run awfully fast, though. And it was also a "Duckside". I s'pose I shoulda kept it and picked up new cylinders, but I just tossed it. Oops.

No mention of sound or DCC, though. I think we all know the answer there. Ed Yeah, PSC doesn't jump on any bandwagons as far as technology goes. But also consider their primary market is for folks who still build models, so things like a sound install are probably in the skill set of their average customer. The MMI K-27 fiasco was a reminder that PSC doesn't really do RTR. If you're expecting that expect disappointment. They do generally deliver quality parts and models if you don't mind getting your hands dirty, though.

Ed Ed,Just about everybody had MRC's "Golden Throttle Pack" back in the 60s and a lot of fast engines was tamed by the throttle packs pulse power switch.. My AHM IHB 0-8-0 was a creeper on pulse power..I never had AHM's 0-4-0T but,had their 0-4-0 with tender..I liked that engines large cab.

Central Valley made a Valve Gear Kit for the Varney Little Joe/Dockside until the mid 60s at least. it may have included better siderods also ? or the Side Rods may have been from Kemtron ? the Original Cast metal versions had some weight to them for thier size. believe the Loco was Pre-WW-2,but not sure when it actually came out. the Kits cost $15.00 in 1950,a Pittman DC-60 was standard then, not sure which year they went to Plastic coated wires, one here still has the old knitted insulation tube. they did help jumpstart HO scale after 1945. the $5.95 Plastic Body version with the Japenese KM motor came out after 1957. Side Rods may have been from Kemtron? Kemtron made a lost wax cab forward kit for the Dockside. Ah, the good olde days of prototype modeling!

Christain, purposely didnt mention that Option,or the 4 wheel leading truck from Kemtron also. the 4 wheel kit was Universal though, not just for the Dockside. there was a big "Fun Factor" back in the 50s !! later Kemtron offered the TT Scale ex-Lindsey Dockside kits into the 60s. PFM had a Deluxe Dockside about 1960 from Sukara[?] made in Japan, at around $27.95 RTR it was almost twice what the cast Metal Varney's went for.there may have also been a kit version from PFM,will check that later. Here's the Central Valley valve gear kit: There's main rods, but not side rods. Ed

Thanks Ed !!! guess one Re-Used the Varney Side Rods ? would need the new drive rods to mount part of the Valve Gear ? got a set of Valve Gear you dont need ? one other Up-Grade that might help in the looks department would be to use similar sized Mantua or Penn Line drivers on the non geared axle at least. small Mantua drivers were available with RP25 flanges at times.
