With my GP35 and U33B waiting for Tru-color to come out with their new RI colors, I started another RI unit. This one will be GP9 1322, a unit that had a bad nose job done after collision damage took out the original nose. The "new" nose was from an SP GP35 which was raised and lengthened to fit the GP9. This one isn't finished yet, but I was having some fun playing with my new macro lens. The model is a Proto Phase II GP9 with a GP18 sill. I started with a decorated Rock Island unit # 1321, but soon realized Proto used the wrong sill for 1321. Luckily I have a handful of old GP18's to scavenge parts from. The nose is made with a Cannon long hood end and some blank roof stock. It is sloped on top just like the top of a normal GP35 short hood. The number board gaskets were shaved from a spare Kato cab. Don't mind the gaps, it's just mocked up at this point. A little over exposed, but it shows the slope on top of the nose.... and cab. I thinned the Proto door so I could model the door open. Gotta love Plano and Cannon. This macro lens really show the flaws in my fan assembly. Railflyer drop grabs and etched mounting flanges. Looks like I need to adjust one of them. Too bad these aren't available anymore. I really prefer them to the DA NBW castings. One of the handful of drawbacks to the Proto GP's are the step wells. Shallow steps and stepped, not sloped side plate. Fortunately this one can be fixed with Cannon parts. This was one of the more difficult etched step installation I've done, since you have to thin a portion on the rear of the pilot face so the bottom step will slide in far enough. And the stepped side sheet filled in with styrene. You can also see where I had to thin the back of the pilot to slide the bottom step in far enough. Lots of work left to do below the walkways.

Thanks guys. What did you use for the spark arrestors? I started with DA spark aresstor and reshaped the bottom half, then cast them in resin.

Very well done. The cab sunshades look very good. Is that a scratchbuilt part, or another extinct Railflyer product?

As someone wise once said: "One man's Athearn GP38-2 with the roof hacksawed off and brush-painted blue is another man's slug".
I kinda feel sorry for that model, but, at least they tried modeling what they wanted.

More than likely you'll feel much better after viewing...
