Today I was reading MRN's comments on the recent Athearn announcement regarding SP rebuilt GP9s (May 2012 issue page 63). According to Athearn and MRN the four locomotives (road #s 3384/3759/3778/3851) are all GP9Rs rebuilt under the GRIP program (1977-1980). After some research, consulting Dan Strack's article on SP rebuilding programs on Utahrails, Richard Percy's SP rosters (a link to The Diesel Shop) and Diesel Era Jan/Feb 2007, I came to the conclusion that three of them (3384/3759/3778) are GP9Es (rebuilt under the R8 program in 1970-1976) and only one of them (3851) is a GP9R rebuilt under the GRIP program. In detail: 3384 EF418E-2 rebuilt in 1973 (GP9E) 3759 EF418E-3 rebuilt in 1974 (GP9E) 3778 EF418E-3 rebuilt in 1975 (GP9E) 3851 EF418R-4 rebuilt in 1978 (GP9R). Is there any SP fan/modeler in the Forum confirming my conclusion ? Ciao. Raffaele

I think most people, myself included, would care more that they match the prototype from a details perspective and not worry so much which rebuilding program they came from. That's my take on it anyway. I do C&NW and you want to talk about a bowl of spagetti when it came to their GP-7/9 fleet, yikes! The best way to do it is to get a pick of the prototype from both sides and match it up because most of these designations mean nothing to the modeler.

The reason the rebuilding program matters is modeling time frame. The R8 programe was earlier, so if it matters, one can justify an earlier modeled time frame.

One picture is a high hood as built and the other picture shows it as a chopped nose unit. Larry
