I've got three NKP Car Co. kits to build as a favor for my Dad. These kits are pretty time consuming, but they go together well and make for nice models when done. The three cars are all CB&Q, and consist of a Diner, Diner/Parlor, and a baggage car. The kits consist of etched brass sides, along with resin roof, ends, and misc details. I'm attempting to have the Diner/Parlor car done for fathers day. Here's where I'm at. I still need to figure out the coupler mounting. Once that's done I can add steam and air lines along with the uncoupling lever. Then it's ready for paint. This particular car will be painted an all aluminum color. The CB&Q painted many heavy weights silver to blend in with their SS cars.

This is the state of the other two kits at the moment. The basic shell of the baggage car has been built, it still needs it's under frame built and grab irons bent and installed. I believe the prototype car was converted from an RPO/Baggage to a straight baggage, hence the small doors near the ends. This kit had the ends molded with the roof out of resin in one piece. I wasn't to fond of that idea since it was warped to hell, and too long to fit the sides. I ended up filling the gap with some strip styrene. It's not perfect, but will look fine when painted Pullman green with a black roof. Not much done to the diner except remove it from it's box.

Those sides should paint up very well and the detail should look very nice. They do look like a lot of work, but that is part of Model Railroading. Larry

Very nice work They appear to build into a good model. I wonder if parts from a Branchline heavyweight could add extra detail especially on the sill?

They could use some aditional underbody detail, as well as replacing some of the crude resin parts, and if they were mine they probably get it. Fotunatley for me my Dad doesn't care about that kind of stuff.

Very nice work on that 1st car. I'm sure your dad will be proud to run all 3, once you have them completed. They might not be up to the current standard of detail, but they still look as if they make up into some good looking cars.

Well, the first car is mostly done in time for Fathers Day. I say mostly because I have a set of marker lights and an interior lighting kit on order for the car. These particular cars were often used on the end of a train, so marker light need to be added. I plan to light them with SMD LED's. It's just a basic all silver car. I was going for an aged yet maintained look. The CB&Q kept their passenger trains pretty clean, so it just got a dusting of grime on the roof and underframe with an overall coat of flat finish. The lounge end that will receive the markers. The diaphragms are AMB and had to have a scale foot taken out of them so the height was correct for the car. The dining tables, complete with place settings. I made them on MS Paint, along with the blinds and curtains. Other than the tables and a styrene partition at the galley end, the interior was left bare for my Dad to detail if he so chooses. I gotta say, I'm pretty happy with the blinds and curtains, considering they took maybe ten minutes to draw up. (figures I take a close up of the only flaw in the etching )

Thanks Jim.
I thought about you while installing the steam lines. And no, they don't fold up. ;D

I spent the last couple days finishing up the baggage car for my Dad. I hadn't touched it since originally starting this thread. One of the reasons I like Polly Scale is the ability to finish a multi color paint job in one day. This car was an unpainted shell this morning. I left the diaphragms and steam/air lines for him to install. I may or may not lightly weather it.
