Hope everyone is having a great time as spring warms up. I did some work lighting and rearranging the May Day Mine this week. I moved the flood loader bins over a track, freeing up the space for a loading dock and parking lot at the mine. Here, the motive power... ...and tail end of the Houston-Portland Zephyr passes by. The Ngineering N8046 modules arrived to drive the lighting in the furnaces at ASARCO. I managed to throw together and post some videos of the effect. Not sure how the videos will show up, but here's a still image. Looking forward to seeing what others have been up to.

Mike, I really enjoy your layout pics - I can easily see in your work that you're having a great time! Let's have a little more Rio Grande fun, here's the first of several F's on my roster, this started as a factory painted model that's had parts/paint added to resemble a '60s era unit prior to be traded in to EMD for a GP-40. The operating enviroment on the Grande was harsh, with long steep grades, tunnels and heavy sanding was encouraged. Locomotives were filthy on the outside and the new wash rack at Burnham couldn't begin to clean the roof or nose For my own railroad the timeline stops at SD40T-2's, occasionally I do some work for a buddy (ex Amtrak/BN,now retired electrician) that enjoys more modern prototypes, here's a Genesis SD70m-2. It's weathered mostly with chalks. Here's a Walthers PS 4427 rebuilt with new ends and a Plano roofwalk - from the days before ExactRail's new model.

T-Bird, Is that a Scoular Covered Hopper, I see in the background! Nice work as usual. Also Great Pictures of your layout Mike, always enjoy seeing them! I managed to actually finish some cars this week! After last week, I actually finished another Ribbed Side Car this week, this version is what they are labeling a Phase I car, with short ribs, 5-5 Ends, Lumber Door and Panel Roof. I painted it with Scalecoat II Boxcar Red, and lettered with the Intermediate Scheme of the late 50's and numbered the car after the general renumbering of 1963. Lettering was supplied with the undecorated kit. Robbins Rails 50' PS1 Boxcar, with the later 10' PS Door from Details West. This is the third car I have done in this paint scheme, but chose a car number from the group that had DF Loader and Bulkheads accounting for the DFB symbol on the car. Car painted with Scalecoat II Reading Green and lettered with Herald King Decals. Athearn PS 4740 Covered Hopper, which is a standin for the prototype's Evans Clone of the PS 4740. Painted with Scalecoat II Reefer Yellow and lettered with Oddballs Decals. Thanks for looking! Rick J

Work progressing on my model of the Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal tug Brooklyn III. Based on the walthers model, but with lots of scratchbuilding. All the windows were reworked and the wood window sash added, as well as the upper lip on top of the wheelhouse. The stack was lowered to its proper height, and new stacks out of aluminum tube added. The bar (yes, it was an actual bar) was built on the upper deck. Both "H" bitts were rebuilt with proper gussets. The entire rear deck from the deck house back is new, simply easier to cut the original off and scratch build a new one. The deckhouse had all the proper fuel and water fittings added to the sides. I decided I did not like the stock bulwarks (the railings around the deck), so I am completely rebuilding them with all the uprights, a new cap rail, and the proper half round around the outside. All new steering tubes as well. The prototype: www.rr-fallenflags.org/misc-b/bedt-tug-ags.jpg

This BN car started as an undecorated Details West kit. It received some additional detail (including door stop strikers added to the plug door, roping lugs, and end grabs), then paint, decals and weathering to represent a prototype photographed in Ogden, UT.

Nice photo's all! CZ on dual gauge track - how cool. Love the Rio Grande F units too, very sweet - looks like they should! The details west kits are still nice cars too, I think I used to have that very car, may still - kept a few of them as they dress up nicely. Here is just a quick update photo of the layout progress - the old Canon Powershot needs replaced - not the sharpest photo's. Now the layout has to compete with yard work and spring but still plan on pushing forward - enjoying it. Come summer, it's going to be just as good to be in the basement as winter with the hot DC heat! A few more photo's in the layout before and after thread showing more of the room and layout progress, small as it is. Picked up a few supplies at Timonium and Kleins on the weekend to work on some freight cars too, wheels, couplers etc. Air compressor is on the shopping list so I can get the airbrush working again, lots of trailers needing silver roofs etc. Cheers, Jim

Weathered a factory painted Athearn Genesis Chessie GP9. The name and the orange stripe were worn away using an air eraser .... Mark.

Nice work all.
You had me going there for a second Mark. Nice Photoshop. How hard was it to get the angle of the model photo just right?

Nice work all. You had me going there for a second Mark. Nice Photoshop. How hard was it to get the angle of the model photo just right? Thanks! - Took probably close to thirty pictures tweaking the angle and lighting to get what I was after. It's surprisingly difficult to attain the same angles of a model that is eight inches long to the real thing. The full size engine angles away from you much faster than the model. Mark.

TBird, Those are some wonderfully dirty F units. Someday soon they'll serve as a guide to my own efforts. Sticking to rolling stock while I learn the weathering ropes, but I have plenty of f units to practice on when I turn to locos. Rick, Great cars! 12bridge, Love that tug boat! Rob, BN Green looks so good, even when dirty. Jim, Thanks! I like seeing the CZ cars on dual-gauge track, too. Mark, Sounds like a lot of effort, but the results speak fro themselves.
