This is for the guys that have seen the new Genesis GP38-2 up close...do you remember if the coupler buffer plate was a separate piece...or molded onto the pilot?
Just wondering how much trouble it will be to stick Details West #363 plates on the new Blue birds...since I ordered some painted units this time around.

Sorry Thomas, I haven't seen it up close, however, I believe the coupler buffer is integrated onto the coupler box/pocket. This is how my WP/UP SD70ACe came, and looking at the photos of the GP38-2 on Athearn's website, I don't see the #5-style coupler box insert that is common on RTR, and earlier Genesis models.
Also, in the video of their GP38 announcement, at about 4:20 you can clearly see that the coupler box on the rear of the SP unit includes the buffer detail.

Looks good...That makes it a bit easier to buy a painted model...I am planning on revising the pilots with new coupler pockets...as well as cutting the free-standing sanding lines off...and installing Details West Sander brackets on these.
I am very excited to see what else comes out of this series. It wouldn't be far fetched to see a GP50 come with this series as well...All Athearn needs is a long hood now...and a walkway sill...provided the SP units' extra battery boxes aren't add-on parts!!

I have heard Athearn plans on doing just about every variation of the EMD 4 axles that ride on a similar frame to the GP38-2!
Shall be interesting to see what they announce in the future! I'm pretty excited to get some of the CP/SOO versions of the GP38-2's and GP40-2's when they get around to doing them.
I was VERY impressed with Athearn's latest few releases, they really stepped up their game. Lets hope it continues.

Well, you figure if they've gone to this length, using a modular approach with the GP38-2 to give us numerous variations, the natural progression would be to apply this formula to just about every diesel that utilized the same platform.
If GP40-2s and 50s are on the way, I wouldn't put it past Athearn to release variants of the GP39-2, as well as straight 38s, 39s, and 40s at some point. Its only logical, and makes the best use of their resources.

Having held it in my hand I can say... Athearn really slayed that Southern 5000-class early GP38-2. Just looking at the preproduction... it may top their EL SD45-2 as the best ethnic diesel they've produced yet. Or the best ethnic diesel *anybody* has produced, with previous highlights being the N&W and Southern high nose GP30s (in correct phases) from Proto, the N&W GP40 from Atlas, and the N&W U30B from Atlas.
I ordered all 4 numbers of the Southern, as well as a Mopac and an SP.... I honestly don't know where the money is going to come from. I have to fork out for the rest of my El Capitan, my script Rapido Canadian when it gets here, and my Hammond XK3C keeps telling me it needs a lower manual... which costs as much as the Rapido Canadian....
Anybody want to buy a lightly used French Horn? ;D
