Thanks for mentioning this as I wasn't aware that something like this existed. I did a search on YouTube and found a clip:
I found it very interesting and certainly innovative. I liked the flange squeal and clickety-clacking. My only critique on the vid is that while I appreciated hearing the flat wheel spot, it also "slightly" sounded like a heavy steam locomotive chuffing rather than the typical "wump-wump-wump" sound that I'm used to hearing on prototype freight cars cruising by with flat wheel spots. But I realize that even though it's an actual recording, the sound is not going to be 1:1 due to current limitations on speaker technology. Overall, a good step in the right direction and it's a feature that adds some nice "flavor" to our hobby. I'm sure that we're going to hear the usual "Well, here's another gimmick!" from some. But I gladly say "Bring it on!" and wouldn't be surprised to see if eventually the competition comes up with their own versions.

First I've heard of it, too. Something new I guess. Lots of great sounds. Wish it had a lighting function, as that would make it more useful for cabooses, etc although they already have another product that could do that in a different form-factor that fits the Blackstone HOn3 caboose.

It has 4 lighting function outputs, so you should be able to use it for lighting cabooses, passenger cars, and probably the EOT as well...

I was wondering about the F outputs. I missed where it mentioned the lighting effects , so presumed they were all audio outputs? Heck, that would work great for several projects I can think off. Kinda wish it was smaller, though, as would fit into HOn3 better. And small is always good for passenger cars where you have to hide it in the interior or underneath.

Mike,
"For even more realism, the decoder has four Hyperlight™ equipped outputs for interior and exterior lights."
Is that what you were wishing for?
Respectfully, BNSF Fan

I think the flange squeal and rail joint sounds would be cool on a switching layout. -------------------------------------------- antoniofp45: Overall, a good step in the right direction and it's a feature that adds some nice "flavor" to our hobby. One of the guys at the railroad club was talking about buying Genesis sound reefers just to pull out the decoders and put them in his Trinities, so this is good news for him, anyway. Personally I'm still not fully on-board with locomotive sound, much less sound-equipped cars.
I'm a bit surprised they don't seem to be offering livestock sounds.

I'm a bit surprised they don't seem to be offering livestock sounds. Just as long as there isn't the smell.

This is huge for me. I could use this in my NJ Transit GP40PH-2B project. I needed something for the HEP generator and didn't know how to get my hands on one of those reefer units, this solves that and looks alot easier on the wallet too. Plus I can now have enouch functions for the 4 strobes on teh roof.

Im really happy these are coming out, I think some of the speakers out there would be okay but to get a better sound think about how big you could go in an excess height car! That will really help the bass. Im interested to see how the consisting actually works too!

We need them to take it one step further, add a horn. With the Bombardier/UTDC and other push/pull equipment out there, we need lights, horn and bell for the push mode. the assorted blowers, AC units, generators, etc found on passenger cars would be useful as well.

They specifically said its perfect for cab cars.

Geez, some people better get the prescription for their eyeglasses checked The opportunity for stereo sound or deeper bass in the larger cars with two or more speakers could be interesting...

Does anyone make a reliable, easy to install pick up for freight car trucks? John I attended a Sountraxx clinic last night where this decoder was unveiled. George B had an image in his PowerPoint presentation, showing using a pair of the Kadee phosphor bronze centering springs that come with #5 couplers. You fold the two centering springs out at 90 degrees, then cut the bottom plate off near the hole, removing the rear vertical piece. Solder a wire. The remaining part is attached (glue, screw, whatever) to the top of the truck bolster (not the correct term, but I'm drawing a blank), one on each side, with the bent out springs touching the back of the wheels. I'm sure they will have an image on their web site once these are available. Dave Hussey Cannon and Company

Pretty soon you will need 10amp boosters for every block of your layout with things like this. LOL

Saw the sound cars last nite during a demo by a Soundtraxx rep. at my LHS. The caboose had a working red marker light.

Cannot find any place on line that sells them. Would like to pick-up a number of them.

I would imagine that power consumption on these is not as much as a normal decoder because no motor is present and that it could be equivalent to cars with incandescent bulbs and a capacitor, so maybe just 5 amps

Very gimmicky for sure. Just another sound detail for us to spend money on. With that said, I like it though. The wheel squealing sound is what I like and my son would LOVE. For my son, I will buy one or two for his enjoyment as he plays on my layout. I am sold, all because of Prince Adarius.

Hey Al,
The wheel squeal alone is my favorite feature. I assume that they're random. Maybe I'm asking for too much, but it would be really cool if the wheel squeal sounds come on when the car takes a curve or is going through a turnout.

I just ordered three of these from Tony's. So I am looking forward to seeing them and what they can do.

Has anyone gotten one of these yet? I ordered the set of three from Tony's and I got an e-mail this morning that they were shipped today. I am looking forwaard to installing them in some freight cars and was wondering if anyone in the group had any experience with them.
