There is a bunch of nonsense postings in the HO forum. Time to delete and tighten the registration process.

Might be an advertising spam bot, but no admins have been on. I wonder if Don can elevate one or two trustworthy regulars to admin to help clean house when this happens.

I agree. If somebody registers at 6:13 PM and in 32 minutes posts 6 spams, he must be excluded from the Forum. Ciao. Raffaele

Raffaele I'm a bit surprised that Pro Boards isn't able to completely keep out the bots. These bots really do detract from forums. I'm also a member of Reading Modeler, and it gets blasted with bot spam regularly. The forum is trying to do something about it (switching to new software). I hope it works, and I hope this forum doesn't get bombarded.

Wasn't one of Atlas's excuses for closing down their forum was the high maintenence which included all the bots and cleaning to keep the forums clear of all that spam, much of it which is automated almost like a virus?

I did contact Don earlier today concerning this matter. I once had a proboards forum, and as I remember correctly, the only one who could initiate blacking and locking was the forum administrator who's name the forum was in. The problem with that, is that person also has a life outside of the forum, and it can take awhile for he/she to take action. Hang in there and it will be taken care of, and I thank you for bringing it to our attention.
Thanks
Doug

...as I remember correctly, the only one who could initiate blacking and locking was the forum administrator who's name the forum was in. But if there were other forum admins/moderators, couldn't those individuals remove the spam at least? I realize the owner might be required to block, but certainly not for just deleting topics which are spam?

Ah, yes, forum SPAM. One of the great joys of being a forum operator. Been there, done that, many times.
Every forum has a setting, usually called "Flood Control", that requires a user to wait 30 seconds between posts. That helps.
Some forums offer a setting that new users must be moderated for a set number of initial posts. Setting this to "3" or something helps prevent the bots from posting.
I have a lot of experience with running forums, e-mail lists, etc. If you want a volunteer to help moderate, I'd be more than happy to. I am on the east coast (USA) and am usually online around 6:30 a.m. Let me know.

While I haven't set up and run forums from the ground up, I've served as moderator on one train forum and for 5 years for a computer game company called Gravity based in California. I assume Don probably can decide who he feels is appropriate if he needs assistance with keeping the forums clean. I live in Fairfax VA (west of Washington DC) EST.

I used to moderate another model railroad forum that was hosted by ProBoards.
If you don't watch these forums like a hawk, you can quickly become overrun by the crap and or even flame wars between members. You need a dedicated staff that will put out the fires between members but more importantly will delete spam FAST through out the day.
Spam on these forums is like dealing with ants. If you are slow at eliminating the initial intrusion more seem to descend and soon you are overrun and the show is over.

I did recieve reports of spam from several members. This issue has been addressed, and the offender's account and IP have been banned and deleted along with any subsequent threads related with the offender.
So far, only a few spammers have mangaged to slip past the automated security. If it gets to the point where it becomes a regular occurance, I will suspend open registration, and require admin approval for all new memberships.
