I was not aware that Athearn ran the FEF-3 in N scale. It must have slipped by. This one might be more correct as the Athearn HO scale model has many incorrect details since they produced the oil fired version with the tender modifications for post 1991 changes and proceeded to use the same tender top for all of the oil fired models. Knowing Kato's quality, this one might actually run well. I had purchased the GS-4 Daylight by Kato and runs as well as any Ho model and probably better than most N scale locomotives. Larry

This is exciting news. Seeing Kato did a GS-4, I have always hoped we would get an FEF.

I recall two or three years ago, Kato announced they would not announce a new product until it came off the production line and was ready for delivery. I agree that was a very tough proposition to make. I just find it comical if not a little dissapointing they are doing just the opposite of what they proposed. Taking reservations with no pre-production sample, no price, and a 4 to 8 month lead time. I will say Kato enforces quality with an iron fist and can be depended on when it comes to pre-orders.

Regardless of what Kato may have said this is great news and every UP modeler needs to rejoice. I talked to a kato rep nearly 3 years ago and this was leaked to me then. I have since been forced into a brass FEF that will be sold to fund 3 or 4 of these. This will be the greatest release to date for Kato
