If you just want to look, you'll have to buy a drink. We need to see a lot more electronic ink here folks. Start posting something, if you don't get a response do a google search, find out the answer, then come back and post a response to yourself. I'll give you a topic: The social impact of brown boxcars on society- Discuss!

I'm not sure that I'd file it under social impact, but I must admit that I really miss the old brown 40 foot single door box cars. In the late 50s and 60s, the C&NW would pass through my hometown and there would be strings of 10 or more of these scattered through the consists.

Does that mean I would be crazy?

Okay, I'll ask...what prompted RRs to paint boxcars this color, back in the day?

Donnell Because Boxcar Red (Brown) was the cheapest paint available as the clay that red paint was made out of was readily available, same reason that most barns are painted red. My railroad modeling era stops in the mid 80's as that is when the current graffiti craze started and I don't like it. That is my social commentary. A couple of my favorite Boxcar Red cars! I miss the 60's to 80's era with colorfull cars, everybody has gone back to the plain jane boxcar red boxcars and gray covered hoppers. Rick J

I have just a curiosity question about the graffiti on rail cars. There are "readers" along the lines that track car movements, along with other needed information on the cars. Does the graffiti affect that?

I believe they are electronic tags nowadays. They shouldn't be affected by the "tags". The old ACI plates would definately have been affected, as they relied on visual scanning,, which is why they weren't too effective because of dirty/faded labels.
