NMRA and National Train show coming up I think. I wonder how dense the layout tours would be in central Michigan?

This is the forst time in several years that I am not going to the NMRA convention. Unfortunately, I have a work conflict that week. Even without the work conflict, I went to the Detroit convention a few years back and saw most of the layouts that are on the tours. The layouts are excellent. If you have not seen Bruce Chubb's layout, it is a must see. There also are some fabulous layouts on which to operate.

My layout is on the tour. There is a large selection of layout tour options for the convention, some bus trips that will allow you about 30 minutes per layout or the self guided tours that sell you ' tickets' to a number of layouts where you can spend as much or as little time as you want. My layout is one of the self guided tours.
We hope to see as many of you as possible.

I though I had read that Bruce Chubb retired and moved out of the second house with the new layout?
Maybe I a mixing up stories though.
Thanks

That is not what we here in the area, however, there does seem to be a finality to the Chubb visits. I've not been privy to many discussions, I live 60 miles from GR and am more Lansing oriented in my MRR activity. As with anything involving the human element it does sound like there are some politics of sort at work along the line.

Thanks Yes, that's the situation with Allen McClelland and the V&O, rather than Dr. Chubb. An easy mistake, since they were both in their publishing prime at about the same time.

Yeah, these guys were in their prime in the 1970's and 80's so another 30 years on and they must be a canny age now so they can't stay that active forever. It would be very cool to have a chance to visit a layout of one of the classic great modelers of the hobby. I enjoyed reading Bruces articles and it looked like his wife and family were all active with him which is awesome.

It would be very cool to have a chance to visit a layout of one of the classic great modelers of the hobby. I was really glad I had the chance to visit John Armstrong's home outside of DC back in the mid-'90s as one of the layout tours for an RPM convention in Hunt Valley (north of Timonium). His O scale layout was featured in so many magazine articles over the years that I recognized many of the scenes. He was a gracious host and a pleasure to talk with. I was also able visit Paul Dolkos' layout on that same tour - his old B&M layout that was featured in many articles also, before he started his new Baltimore-based layout. Another famous and beautiful layout that I'm glad I got to see before it was gone. Dave

I went to the Detroit Convention in 1978 and saw Irv Schultz's layout and that is another one that is gone. Irv did great structure work, but very seldom ran trains. I had been there a number of times and the only time trains ran was at the convention.

Yes I mixed up Bruce Chubb. Sorry. I think he was the guy building the computer interface from scratch back in the day? I remember reading these massive circuit layout diagrams you "just" soldered together.................

By all means, if you have not seen the layouts in Grand Rapids and Landsing, go the the convention there are some really excellent layouts in that region.

Even if I weren't going to be up there as part of the Operations Road Show team providing hands-on operations clinics all week, I'd definitely be going, anyway. It's only two hours up the road from home.
There are a lot of really good layouts in West Michigan, and the published slate of clinics looks good this year.
